Akbar diary entries talk about killing `battle buddies' -Hasan Akbar fragged fellow soldiers

(FORT BRAGG) - A sergeant on trial for a grenade attack at an Army camp in the Kuwait desert days before the Iraq invasion wrote in his diary before he was deployed about killing fellow soldiers.

An FBI agent read four passages from Sergeant Hasan Akbar's computer diary Thursday.

Akbar wrote about making the choice to kill Iraqis, whom he called his Muslim brothers, or "my battle buddies."

He said in one passage that if the Army left him at Fort Campbell and didn't try to humiliate him, he wouldn't do anything.

But the passage ended by saying that if he was sent to Iraq, he would "try to kill as many of them as possible."

Akbar is charged with two counts of first degree murder and is eligible for a death sentence.

Prosecutors said the diary entries show he planned to kill soldiers and that his actions warrant a death sentence.

There is the word *IF* and frankly I do not buy if for one moment. Have to tell you I do not think anyone on the jury is buying it either.

BTW, I use the term frag as based on other articles. It does not appear in the dictionary so I asked beloved (No longer free State) and he said it was " I believe it originally was used in reference to troops trying to kill their own commanders with fragmentation grenades". So you decide if it fits.

PINGing those that wanted my updates.

Yup. Via Viet Nam.

Akbar deserves death. His own writings show he had enemy sympathies, and his actions were meant to harm the effectiveness of his division. In short, he's a traitor and should die a traitor's death.

Sounds like Akbar is going down. Good.

Here's a general question for anyone: Is the incidence of "fragging" in Vietnam something that is genuinely well-documented, of is this possibly another case of anti-war myth-making?

Thanks for posting. Had forgotten about him recently. Sounds like the court martial is ongoing. Any idea what the context of the FBI agent is? Why would the FBI have any involvement? Any idea what stage the trial is in? Thanks

Oh he deserves the stiffist sentence there is. I suppose I might be the only one feels that this trial should have been covered with cameras but I do understand why.

It is open to the public though.

He should have been tried at Cambpell. As someone who has be stationed there for several years, they deserved to be the ones sitting in judgement of this POS.

Forgive my colorful terms.

Sounds like he would have simply found another reason to kill Americans even if he hadn't been sent to Iraq.

This shows a definite ding in the mental defect defense. He states a choice that shows a revenge motive. This man doesn't appear ill at this point but only evil.

Forgive my colorful terms.

I would call them appropriate.

How he even made it into the Army is a mystery to me. I heard somewhere there was a call from some congressmoron to recruit more muslimes into the military....can anyone confirm that or not?

No idea. However, growing up with Vietnam vets, you get the impression that it was a real concern for officers smart enough to recognize it and bad enough to deserve it.

Viet Nam *was* a bad war that did bad things to people. For many soldiers and Marines. it was virtually nonstop combat for a year or more... that'll mess with ya. And then you dump a Lt. on 'em who doesn't know which end the bullets come out, and has too much ego to ask the Sarge's advice when nobody else is listening... it's a recipe for disaster.

I was with the 298th Sig in Quang Tri in 1971.Eating mess at lunch time we heard a loud explosion. Everyone ran outside to find a hooch with the door(a piece of plywood)with about 200 holes in it.That wasn`t really a fragging though, the bros got themselves when they set off the trap themselves.

I always enjoy folks points of view. This case has been going on 2 plus years. So I went through my old threads and formatted them to add to this discussion thread, I also added those threads of my esteemed fellow Freepers who have posted on this topic through the process.

I pulled the first two to the top, because I found these articles most riveting and sad. It reminds you of the great loss to the military, to the families, to the friends to our country this POS created when he murdered his fellow military members.

I say members, because one was Air Force and one was Army.

Thanks as always to those who comment, it is a real joy to have wonderful discussion as this trial creeps along.

First thank you. I am very angry about this man who killed our fellow military folks.

His background is well unstable at best. Frankly does he even know who he is. When I read comments from his mother, well how the hell do I know she is in fact his mother.

I know you marry and add a name. It just all sit's with a bitter pill to me.
