WASHINGTON - People here remember Haley Barbour as a slightly raffish Mississippi good ol boy with a low center of gravity and a syrupy drawl who became chairman of the Republican Party, made a bundle as a tobacco lobbyist and then went home to of all things become governor: A shrewd inside player, but not someone who automatically springs to mind as presidential material.
It speaks volumes about the condition of the GOP that at least a few people around town are talking up Barbour as a Republican presidential contender in 2008 and that at least a few of his fellow Republicans (and not just his former business partner, Ed Rogers) seem to be taking the idea somewhat seriously.
Heres the long and short of the reasons why:
1. There is no obvious successor to George Walker Bush as El Jefe of the GOP except perhaps Gov. John Ellis Jeb Bush of Florida who, by virtue of being Little Brother to the President, is too oppressively obvious and therefore problematic.
2. The partys centrifugal forces of ideological and personality have been held together by the iron bands of Bushian will and Roveian guile. But, if for no other reason than that the president cant run for a third term, these bands soon will break.

Just an observation...:-)
WE TOLD YA! THE SOUTH'S GONNA RISE AGAIN! AND WE DID!.........>8^P
His name has been floating around for a while. He seems like an interesting choice. But so far the favorite (and I'm sorry to say) among the White House is Bill Frist. They will probably endorse Frist whom I am not too happy about.
RISE AGAIN???? LOL That's all we've have is Southerners for president since Kennedy!! SHHHHHH don't tell that to DEAN!!! Isn't he in like flint with those southerners???? He's gonna get those redneck votes ya know! ;-)
Haley Barbour has as much appeal as did Bob Dole. Don't even think it.
WRONG!
NIXON was from NY/CA and Ford was from MI. Bush 41 from ME/TX
Gov. Barbour has a personality that Dole is still looking for......
In many ways the south is where it is at, right now. That is why the leadership is coming from it.
Delay is the Man! He has been the only one to try to stand up against the Judicial system. Americans will support a real leader. Go Tom!
Actually our current President Bush is from CT/TX. He was born in CT but grew up in TX So I guess we can chock another one up. Thanks for the info by the way.
I thought Clinton was from New York...
Neither Clinton is from New York. Bill is from AK and Hillary is from IL!
Reagan was born in Illinois...
SOUTHERN Illinois?........
