Gigantic Confederate Flag Flies Over I-65 Flag Erected By Sons Of Confederate Veterans

POSTED: 7:54 pm CDT April 11, 2005 UPDATED: 4:57 pm CDT April 12, 2005

VERBENA, Ala. -- A huge Confederate flag now waves high above motorists traveling Interstate 65 in Autauga County.

For some, it symbolizes a rich southern history, but others acknowledge that it could be seen as offensive.

“I like it because we're from the south, and I'm a big southern girl,” said Kim Jones, a Verbena resident.

The 20- by 30-foot Confederate flag can be seen for miles and is located at mile marker 194. It sits on private property with the land cleared by the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

The organization, which claims to be nonprofit and not political, issued a press release, saying, “We will be flying our flag at this location on a temporary basis for the month of April.”

“It doesn't offend me, but I can see where it would offend some people,” said Jean Harris, a local resident. “But I see it more as heritage and history.”

With the help of a 100-foot flagpole, the Sons of the Confederate Veterans hope Alabamians and visitors traveling this stretch of the interstate will remember the state's history and heritage.

Organizers said after landscaping is complete, the flag will be flying permanently at this site and a dedication ceremony is scheduled for June 26. The flag has been on display about a week.

State legislators said they've been contacted about the flag but have yet to see it for themselves.

Never fear - I'm sure the ACLU is on the way. The flag won't be there for long.

It sits on private property

Wonder if that'll mean anything to the liberal nutcases?

Yeah, I remember the history of the Confederate flag in Alabama. They raised it over the state capitol just after the Brown vs. Board of Education. That was the year after four little girls were murdered by the Klan in Birmingham.

Nice of SoCV to remember that.

This has been brought on by PC. Even the word "Dixie" is deemed offensive so on Alabama license plates, they have shrunk the "Heart of Dixie" motto to almost microscopic size.

They are getting rid of Confederate references on public property but Confederate flags are more common than ever on cars, on T-shirts, and on private land.

Which "Confederate" flag? Unless its the the Battle Flag, no one will notice. All of the "complainers" are too ignorant to know the difference.

And here's a bunch of folks exercising that freedom of speech and expression the leftwing liberals alway harp about.

Good for them. I'm not party to their 'thing' but it is their heritage and you'd think the same "diversity" crowd that tolerates Muslims excising little girls' genitalia with razor blades would tolerate the people who want to celebrate their heritage.

Right Winger.

Atheist.

When trying to solve an equation, it is perfectly permissible to multiply both sides by zero. You will be left with a true equation. Unfortunately, you won't have solved anything.

Believes that arrogance is a carefully cultivated talent.

P.S. I get asked a lot, so if you're wondering "Zeroisanumber" is a reference to a Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds song.

I wonder which emanation of a reflected penumbra will be used to take down the flag.

Think your chronology is a bit skewed. The Brown decision was announced in the spring of 1952 the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church took place on Sept 15, 1963. When I lived in Montgomery in the early 1970's there was no Confederate flag (National or battle flag) flown at the statehouse. There was a large bronze medallion planted in the floor of the veranda at the place Jefferson Davis was sworn in as the Provisional President of the CSA. I think that medallion may have had the St Andrew's Cross with stars representation of the seceded states.
