The Iraqi Transitional National Assembly chose its President, the Kurd leader Jalal Talibani, and two Vice Presidents, in its sequential effort to set up a democratic government, drawing congratulations from President Bush. The National Assembly's activities today were watched via television by Saddam Hussein.
President Bush traveled to Rome with Mrs. Bush, Secretary of State Rice, and the former Presidents Bush and Clinton. Thirty Members of Congress are also invited to attend Pope John Paul II's funeral Friday. Tomorrow President Bush will meet privately with the US delegation of Cardinals, and both the Italian Prime Minister and President.
Ukraine's President Yushchenko addressed Congress, thanking Americans for their support in the recent democratic elections in Ukraine.
US House of Representatives Speaker Dennis Hastert is recovering from kidney stone removal surgery in Bethesda Naval Hospital.
