Mount St. Helens rumbling again

VANCOUVER, Wash. - Mount St. Helens has been rumbling with a series of small earthquakes.

The University of Washington seismographs show there was a 3.0 magnitude quake at 9:41 Sunday night, a 3.4 at 10:43 and a 3.2 Monday morning at 3:56.

In the past, such quakes have indicated a steam burst or minor ash plume.

A spokesman for the University of Washington seismology lab, Bill Steele, said the quakes "do seem to be getting a little bit larger and that's of interest, but what it all means we don't know."

Scientists lost most of their instruments in a minor eruption last month in the crater. Weather has not allowed them to replace the GPS and seismograph packages called spiders.

Steele said there has been no confirmed steam or ash plume from the latest activity, although he says that's a possibility. He says there also may be rockfalls in the crater or magma pulsing onto the crater floor.

An eruption adding on to a lave dome has been under way at the volcano since October.

On March 9, the volcano shot gritty volcanic ash to about 36,000 feet above sea level. It could be seen from miles around, including Portland, Oregon, and moved northeast.

Scientists said it was the most powerful blast from St. Helens since the latest round of volcanic activity began last fall.

The plume was accompanied by an earthquake of about 2.0 magnitude.

We went on a trip last week. Through a hole in the clouds, we could see Mt. St. Helens when we flew over, and it was even steaming for us!

Question..if one looks at the "ring of fire"..MSH and the recents quakes in Indonesia are just about at the opposite end of the ring..diametrically opposed..more than coincidence?

Is that the Doom of the Rock, or the Dome of the Rock?

Mount St. Helens rumbling again

I am starting to think Mount St. Helens is like 'a watched pot of water trying to boil'. It will blow the moment after we stop looking at it.

It was like that even before the lasty big eruption in 1980.
I remember hearing it blow up and joking to my wife, I thought it was someone blowing up a stump or something.
Pretty impressive though, hearing it erupt from 100 miles away.
I had to call Mama in Alabama and tell her that her son Delmont was ok and not to worry. That was before I had my drop top Lucille and I didn't have to worry about any ash ruining her paint job.

Yes. It's a bit of a running joke in The Hobbit Hole. Those pinged are in Washington state.
