Doctor: Terri Can Recover
Newsmax ^ | Tuesday, March 22, 2005

CLEARWATER, Fla. - A prominent brain specialist believes that Terri Schiavo can recover with proper treatment.

Dr. William Hammesfahr, nominated for a Nobel Prize for his work in medicine, told the Christian Wire Service that he "and others I know have treated many patients worse than Terri, and have seen them regain independence and dignity."

Dr. Hammesfahr said he has examined Terri Schiavo three separate times for a total of over 10 hours. "There are many approaches that would help Terri Schiavo. I know, because I had the opportunity to personally examine her, her medical records, and her X-rays."

The doctor has helped patients with chronic brain injuries - including hypoxic encephalopathy, Schiavo's injury - recover. Judge Susan Kirkland of the Florida Department of Health said that he was "the first physician to restore deficits caused by stroke."

Dr. Hammesfahr was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology in 1999. In 2000, his work resulted in approval for the first patent in history granted for the treatment of neurological diseases with medications that restore blood flow to the brain.

"It's time to help Terri instead of just warehousing her," Dr. Hammesfahr said. "She would have benefited from treatment years ago, but it is not too late to start now."

I just heard this doctor today call into the Glenn Beck show. But, oddly, Beck, a big supporter of Terri's cause, stopped the conversation when the doctor wouldn't go further about what his report said. Then Beck apologized to his listeners for having the doctor on. He said he just didn't trust something about the guy, that the warning lights were flashing.

Don't know what all that was about...?

Here's an interesting story.

The execution was halted late Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Terry Means in Fort Worth.

Means was acting on an appeal from Staley's lawyer who argued the convicted killer is mentally incompetent and should not be put to death.

"Judge Means' order was that nobody's ever heard this guy's competency question," attorney Jack Strickland said.

the convicted killer is mentally incompetent and should not be put to death.

Terri is being put to death because she is mentally incompetent.

Someone here a couple of days ago posted something about this guy...said he was a laughingstock or something. Possibly not really nominated for the Nobel prize.
That being said, there are new tests that can be done now to determine the level of her brain function and husband won't allow for the obvious reason that he just wants her dead.

I read the story in the local San Antonio newspaper during lunch. Seems that Staley was interviewed last year by some psychiatrists who stated that he was aware of what his case was about and that he understood why he was on death row. Sounds pretty darned competent to me.

She's hasn't been helped in all the years past because her husband has stopped all therapy, ordered that NO therapy be given her. Terri was able to talk a few words, used to sit at the nurses station and interact with people and was able to eat from a spoor or fork when fed....but hubby put a stop to all of that. He's forbidden her to be taken outside, he's forbidden her window curtains to be opened, etc.....he's shut her off from the world. He had the spoon feeding stopped and insisted she be fed through a tube instead.

Dr. William Hammesfahr, nominated for a Nobel Prize for his work in medicine,

Can you provide proof of this? There's no mention in the nomination database at nobelprize.org of him ever being nominated.

I think the President should spare this woman via an Executive Order or Presidential Pardon/Clemency. I damn sure would if I held the office.

My mistake. It was last week when he was examined. Staley was examined last week by psychiatrists who determined he was aware of his punishment and why he was being put to death. Those are the criteria the U.S. Supreme Court established in 1986 as the standards for allowing execution of people whose competency is at issue. http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/metro/stories/MYSA032305.3B.texas_execution.1649818e6.html

Someone here a couple of days ago posted something about this guy...said he was a laughingstock or something. Possibly not really nominated for the Nobel prize.

He was nominated for the Nobel Prize.....by his local congressman. According to the Nobel Prize website, invitations are sent out to approximately 3,000 people who are allowed to propose candidates. The 3,000 are "mainly members of the Nobel Assembly, previous prize winners, and a selection of professors at universities around the world." If my mother sent a letter to the Nobel Committee recommending me, I would be just as much a Nobel Prize nominee as this guy.

By the way, the doctor was also disciplined in 2003 by the Florida Board of Medicine, which ruled that he charged a patient for services that were not provided. The board fined him $2,000, placed him on probation for six months, and ordered him to pay approximately $52,000 in administrative costs and to perform 100 hours of community service.

Dr. Hammesfahr claims to have been nominated for a Nobel Prize based on a letter his congressman sent to the Nobel Committee asking that he be nominated. IIRC, the Committee has demanded that he stop claiming he was nominated.

Also, he has been punished be the State of Florida for medical fraud before and is currently in a dispute that could cost him his medical license. I really wish the Schindlers would get someone better than this quack. He may be right about Terri, but his own problems kill his credibilty especially in court.

You type faster than I do! You seem to have better info than I do - Do you know what the dispute he is currently in is all about?
