Majority Agrees With Judge's Decision in Schiavo Case
The Gallup Organization ^ | March 23, 2005 | Jeffrey M. Jones

Posted on 03/23/2005 8:21:59 AM PST by snowsislander

PRINCETON, NJ -- A one-night CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll finds a slim majority of Americans agreeing with a federal judge's decision in the Terri Schiavo case. The decision effectively denied a request by Schiavo's parents to re-insert the feeding tube helping to keep her alive, pending further legal action in the matter. Relatively few Americans see much hope for improvement in Schiavo's condition, even if the feeding tube were re-inserted permanently.

A majority of Americans express sympathy for both sides in the dispute -- Schiavo's husband, who wants the feeding tube removed to end her life, and Schiavo's parents -- though more are sympathetic with the parents than with the husband. Still, most Americans believe husband Michael Schiavo is being truthful when he says his wife told him she did not want to be kept alive by artificial means.

By wide margins, Americans disapprove of the actions of President George W. Bush and the Republicans in Congress in the Schiavo case. Americans also disapprove of the actions of the Democrats in Congress, but to a smaller degree. The public is divided in its view of the media's handling of the case.

Detailed findings of the March 22 poll follow.

By a 52% to 39% margin, Americans agree with the federal judge's decision that resulted in the feeding tube -- removed on Friday -- not being re-inserted. Two in three Americans hold their views with some conviction: 37% strongly agree with the judge's decision; 30% strongly disagree.

I place no credence in polls, and I normally would not post any on Free Republic, but by long coincidence, it turns out that I was one of the people polled by Gallup last evening for this very poll.

Certainly wouldn't be the first time the majority was wrong.

Since you were polled, was this a push poll? Were the questions designed to elicit certain answers?

If true, then they are losing ground FAST:

"A one-night CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll finds a slim majority of Americans agreeing with a federal judge's decision in the Terri Schiavo case."

Didn't they have some giant majority a few days ago? The gagged witnesses are taking their toll already?

This seems to refute the ABC poll taken the other day which concluded that 80% agreed. I think that as people find out more about this, more people disagree.

I would very much like to see the videos that the judge won't let us see. I suspect that there is a reason other than "privacy" that we can't see them.

Another useless poll.

This is how the poll was outlined to the voters.

"As you may know, Terri Schiavo is a Florida woman in a PERSISTENT VEGATATIVE STATE who was being kept alive through the use of a feeding tube. The feeding tube was removed on Friday, an action that will result in her death within about two weeks. A federal judge made a ruling in the case today."

Who wouldn't vote to leave the tube out when the it's framed they way they did?

If it is not true, then it is a lie and an attempt the the libs to perpetuate falsehoods.

If it is true, then there goes all the talk about the US becoming a "Red State" nation, with MORALS being the outstanding issue for Americans in 2004 and the Moral Right making inroads, down the drain.

The people I've polled so far are generally not in support of the US Congress having stepped in. And a lot of these people are otherwise conservatives. So, I don't know....

most of those idiots dont understand the difference between life support and a feeding tube, or the difference between being terminal and handicapped. Funny how nobody wanted to unplug good ol' Christopher Reeves!

Have you heard about that now infamous ABC poll? It asked if taking Terri off life support was appropriate. They used the term life support.

I will give weight to polls when they start weighting them.

That is, I want to know the awareness and intelligence of the respondents. Like this: "Of the __% who agree with the court's decision, 92% believe Ms. Schiavo is brain ded, 96% think she is on life support, and only 13% are aware that she was never given an MRI to determine her exact condition."

Like that.

It's because they don't know the truth, the media (including FOX) has been really deceptive on this, calling her brain dead etc.

Want to know what Jeb could do? Unseal her records, and make them public (along with the records of the settlement fund expenditures).

Actually, I think this poll (and I think a FOX poll) probably has the numbers about right. They are not out of whack with the biased Pew poll last weekend. Plus, the more I think people learn about the case, the more they change their mind.

Polling has no place in questions of morality and ethics. History shows us that any number of morally reprehensible and repugnant acts and policies have been supported by popular majorities. Crowds in the tens of thousands cheered the slaughter and devouring by wild animals in the Roman Coliseum people who adhered to a minority religion. People of African descent were kept as slaves in the tens of thousands by people in this country a few short centuries ago, supported by popular majority. Hitler slaughtered untold millions in Germany less than a century ago, and was wildly popular in his home country.

So, just because it is popular doesn't mean it is right.

Where are the co called "FReepers" who call for Terri's death?

Why don't they join the co called
"right wing media personalities"
who say Terri is brain dead.

IF she's "dead" like they claim then why the rush to see her die?

Why not just let her parents continue their care?

or

WHY DON'T YOU DEMAND THAT TERRI BE GIVEN LETHAL INJECTION RIGHT NOW!

YOU SICK SOB'S WANT HER TO DIE SLOWLY WHILE YOU "CELEBRATE" YOUR "VICTORY"

Hell has a special place for "people" like you!

The majority of Americans do not know the sordid details of this case and how badly it stinks. They watch the controlled, liberal media who have consistently lied about the facts of this case. If they knew what most of us do, they would probably vote to save her life.

If they had listened to the polls in 1776, our next head of state may very well be Queen Camilla.
