A Cheney candidacy in 2008?
Washington Times ^ | Tuesday, March 22, 2005 | By Tod Lindberg

President Bush famously rewards loyalty and competent service. There is one more promotion logical for him to make in his second term: engineering the 2008 GOP presidential nomination for Dick Cheney. Such a move is not, of course, within the president's plenary authority. Others will surely want the nomination. Republican-primary voters will have to be heard from. But as the 2004 election demonstrated to the surprise of many, Mr. Bush is something close to a beloved figure among Republicans nationally. That's true at the grassroots level, and it's true among the party's biggest donors. They all regard Mr. Bush as having persisted against huge adversity in a sober but bold fashion to the benefit not only of his personal political stature but also of the party. If Mr. Bush decides that he would like Mr. Cheney to succeed him, the momentum created would be huge and instantaneous.

Anyone confirm the rumor that W's nickname for Condi is 44? If If not, it would be fun to watch Cheney take on Hillary.

Heard the rumor, but don't know of any confirmation, though.

Cheney is ideal in most respects. However his health may not permit such a run.

Thanks. If it is 44, I'd look for Cheney to step down next year and Rice to replace him. If not, the Cheney presidential bid in '08 seems possible/probable.

Cheney is NOT going to run. This is silly in the extreme! He's repeatedly said it and so has Lynn.

I suddenly awoke at about 3:30 AM this morning and the first thing I could think of was to check that the appeals court had said that Terry's feeding tube had been reinserted. Something I was confident would have happened by now.

I see to my horror they are letting her die.

Right now, I could care less about Bush or Cheney or Condi. Right now I'm so fed up with the "powers that be" because they can't keep some poor woman from being murdered that I'm not sure it really matters anymore who's president. I'm thinking they are all a bunch of bums right now. The whole lot of them including Congress and all in the judiciary.

I'm going to say a prayer and go back to sleep. Which is what most of the country appears to be. Asleep.

It's an unconfirmed rumor as far as I know.

That's a very likely scenario -- and one the MSM absolutely dreads.

That's what I think. I used to doubt they would do it, but I am beginning to think that the only objection to Condi is that she has never run for office, and the only way to negate that would be to have her in the VP slot, giving her a sort of incumbency.

Also, if she is named as VP, doesn't she have to go before Congress? I am a little hazy on my recollection of how Gerald Ford was approved when Spiro Agnew resigned.

Bingo -- that's the nightmare scenario for the Left ;-) Already they're losing sleep worrying about just that possibility ;-)

Under this scenario, Jeb would be her likely pick for running-mate. Locks in Florida, principled, strong pro-life stance -- particularly in the Schiavo case -- should keep the base delighted. And with Hillary as the opponent, imagine how energized the GOP base will be.

Re: Hillary, here's a dirty little secret. The Left isn't all that thrilled with the prospect of her running. The Clintons, in their estimation, were, believe it or not, too 'far to the right', and they're looking for a candidate even further left than Kerry, if that's possible.

I don't know about Jeb as veep. I think that there is some resentment of the dybasty issue (although not from me).

Well, we will see.

Ah, but with Hillary running, that argument goes out the window.

Well, they are about as stupid now as I have ever seen them, so I think there is a possibility that they would. At least I am sure Barbara Boxer would try.

As much as I love Cheney and think he and Rummy run the country, if he doesn't save Terri, I'm going to question him. Where's his Montana bravery?

I'd love a Cheney/Rice ticket. Then she could say she's run. And if he dies of a heart attack, she'll rise, and the people who might be mean to her will be nice to her because of the circumstances, and then she'll be able to get the second term easily.

What if...CONDI goes to Florida and rescues Terri?! A definite win. If her rescuing Terri creates too much negative spin, she doesn't want to run for office anyway, no big deal.

A Cheney/Rice ticket in 2008 would be ideal and like a broken drum.
