With apologies to Doug From Upland -- (Sung to the tune of "The Beverley Hillbillies" theme)
Let me tell 'ya a little story
'bout a Freeper named Bob
Could'nt buy a house
though he had a good job
then one day he asked his wife
"Do we have to stay here for the rest of our lives?"
"No" she said
"Let's go"
"LA sucks"
Well the next thing you know
'Ol Bob is on the net
Scoutin' out a place
that would be a good bet
His company said "If some one else quits,
than to our Dallas office, you can then split."
Texas that is,

Well sure, index finger is the correct way to wave, however, using the middle finger is absolutely necessary, occasionally, in certain instances.....and no, I don't do that......... well, rarely, or occasionally,....just don't ride my bumper or cut me off in traffic..........otherwise I'm definitely going to wave with my index finger....... ;^)
Now that you're a (soon-to-be) Texan, you need to know the rules.
Strangers may talk to you with smiles on their faces. They are not necessarily trying to con you or sell you something. They're just Texans being friendly.
Women who call you "hon and "shug" are not hitting on you.
When you walk by someone on the street, you make eye contact, smile and either
a. say, "How're ya doon?"
b. say, "Hidey!"
c. nod
Got it? :-)
My Dad was a nonnative Texan named Bob who sang bass in church. So I like you already. :-)
Try Church of Christ. They are NOT United Churches of Christ.
They stick to the bible and are conservative. They don't typically have choirs -- everyone sings in harmony together a capella -- I love it myself, not everyone does. Just FYI.
ROFLMPJO!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, it's rural, and yes I love it........I'm not on "watrefront" but can be there in 15 minutes.
But I really think they're talking about Maryland and not Virginia (we do share the same 'eastern shore')
Even though the Maryland shore is red, MD itself is a bit too blue for my taste.......which is why we are in VA.
Welcome to Texas.

Then it ought to be illegal for them to break down in August as well.
Fall? where do you live Dalhart?
It probably would be if every law maker didn't have a brother-in-law in the A/C repair bidness.
BTW,
a "mayor" runs a town,
but a "not mayor" is just a bad dream.
An excellent synopsis of Texas you did here. A keeper.
ADD: If you get out of the city and see a funeral procession, you pull over to side of road and stop until it is passed. Doesn't matter that you don't know the deceased or family - it's a sign of respect and you just do it....and mean it.
Wal-marts and HEB (that's the best grocery store chain in Texas)
Be careful -- avg hwy speed in Dallas is 85 mph...
Well, well, well...
Welcome to Texas... Coming from another FReeper who is a native Californian (Santa Clara Valley) and now resident in Allen, Texas. I've been here for five years now and I love it.
Allen is also a great part of North Texas to raise children, if you have any.
Always have been around, just not on the California threads as much as I used to :-)
Oh, you'll have *no* problem finding a Wal-Mart around here. I think that you'll find the grocery stores a lot friendlier, too (just a guess- never been to CA).
Oh, and one thing to watch out for- this state is just crawling with beautiful women of all ages. I'm tellin' ya, if the rest of the country new that, we'd be swamped!
Thank you. I just wrote what came to mind. I'm sure that there is more to be said on the subject.
Good luck! We fled two years ago to the Midwest. We have NEVER regretted it. We were natives and actually owned a home in Riverside, but after being carjacked in my driveway and burglarized twice we hightailed it out of there. That, plus an experience with a leaking appendix after being sent home from the crowded emergency room FOUR times (too filled with illegals to bother with an insured patient?), the loss of my husband's job to India, the four-hour daily round-trip commute, and the high tax rate drove us out. Nobody in my circle of old friends lives in CA anymore, anyway. We miss family, but they're talking more and more about getting out if they can.
Some others asked for advice on moving out of CA. My best advice is that if you rent a truck to move yourself, rent from Penske. IMO they were FAR better than U-Haul or Budget. Well worth any extra money.
Bob! Great to hear the news that your moving to Texas!
Welcome to the land of less liberals, more guns, more churches, (hmmm is that related)?
I'll freep mail you the church my wife and I attend up the way from you in McKinney.
