Walt Disney Board Is Expected To Name Iger as New CEO
WSJ ^ | 3/13/05 | MERISSA MARR and MYLENE MANGALINDEN

Walt Disney Co.'s board is expected to name President Robert Iger as its new chief executive shortly, according to a person familiar with the situation. Mr. Iger would succeed longtime chief Michael Eisner, who has announced plans to step down.

Disney's board met late Saturday to discuss the CEO search and could announce Mr. Iger's promotion as early as Sunday. The leading external contender in the succession battle, EBay Inc. Chief Executive Meg Whitman, withdrew her candidacy for the position Friday.

Having been stripped of his chairman title after a shareholder revolt last year, Mr. Eisner announced plans to depart as CEO when his contract expires in September 2006. Disney's board had pledged to hire a new CEO by this June, and hired a search firm to look for external candidates.

Mr. Eisner put forward Mr. Iger, his number two, as his preferred internal candidate some months ago. Mr. Iger, 54 years old, has been Disney's president since 2000, and was a top executive at Capital Cities/ABC Inc. before it was acquired by Disney in the mid-1990s.

Together with Mr. Eisner, he saw Disney through a long earnings slump in the late 1990s and early 2000s. But he gained momentum as a CEO candidate in the past year as Disney's financial performance picked up, especially in the television business with hits like "Desperate Housewives."

According to people close to Disney, the board was also due to consider whether to usher Mr. Eisner out of the company soon after a new CEO is installed. That would provide some cover for the board with Mr. Iger's appointment; critics have said that he would not have true control of the company if Mr. Eisner remained in the picture in any way.

It should be interesting to see Iger continue to take the company down the same beaten path Eisner was sending it down.

Cool! Maybe he can halt the slide into depravity that Eisner championed.

She's a babe!

Too bad she works for the nearly-dead Communist News Network.

Think you need to revisit the concepts of Christian charity, forgiveness and accountability, my friend.

Yeah, cleel, get with the program. Don't you remember where the Son of God repudiated God the Father for all that petty "abomination" stuff?

Darn, that pesky 9th commandment gets in the way sometimes. Can't we write it out?

You're conveniently moving your own goal posts.

If you want to address Christian charity and forgiveness, as it applies to homosexuality, then argue that topic. However if you want to re-write "Thou shalt not bear false witness" into "Thou shalt not make a mistaken utterance", then you're on very thin ice. And given Eisner's terrible record, it was a very understandable mistake for clee1 to make (if indeed it is one).

Sometimes I think it would have been better if the company broke up back in 1984.

Althought the Disney flick "The Pacifier" was cheesy and had some rude jokes in it, there was no "gayness" to it. Maybe Disney is starting to figure it out?

I believe that Iger is a Republican. I remember that during the Oscars, there were several Hollywood Republicans in Washington DC for a Republican conference and he was listed as one of them attending.

Lies!

Eisner has been married to one woman since 1967 and they have three sons.

Sell your homophobic pandering and falsehoods elsewhere.

Oh boy, Disney has one of the eggheads from the 'City of Evil' running things. Diversity will be pushed and focused on the most. What the heck happened to Walt's vision? Miramax gets the most attention pushing some film on a perverted "social issue" while the Theme Parks are deteriorating.

Homophobic?

I think NOT. There is a difference between a fear of homosexuals and/or homosexuality, and a deep disgust of the homosexual lifestyle.

As far as I'm concerned, the homo community can do whatever they want; I'll tolerate their lifestyle - but hell will freeze over before I respect or celebrate it.

Hell will also freeze over before my children are taught that homosexuality is acceptable.
