Good riddance to Rather
jewish world review ^ | March 11, 2005 | Thomas Sowell

Ordinarily, the retirement of a TV newsman would be something to be more or less passed over in silence by friend and foe alike. But the retirement of Dan Rather as anchorman of CBS news has caused so much spin in the media that some of this spin may become "well-known facts" by sheer repetition unless challenged by real facts.

One popular spin is that it is a shame that a long and distinguished career should be judged by one unfortunate error like the forged documents that Rather relied on to question President Bush's National Guard service.

Those who believe this might dig into the records of the CBS News broadcast of March 27, 1991, when Dan Rather said: "A startling number of American children are in danger of starving" because "one out of eight American children is going hungry tonight."

This was a crock — but it was a fashionable crock on the left at that time and Dan Rather not only echoed but amplified a ridiculous "study" done by leftist activists. He probably didn't set out to tell a lie then any more than he did when he relied on forged documents to try to "get" President Bush on the eve of last year's election.

Neither was either of these nor other cases simply a matter of a zealous reporter trying hard to get a story. It was bias — and bias has long been the besetting sin of the mainstream media. That is why Dan Rather's scandal is bigger than Dan Rather and will justifiably continue to taint much of the media after his recent retirement as CBS anchorman.

I don't think anyone could answer the question "Who is Dan Rather" more succinctly than Mr. Sowell.

I agree...we should not judge Dan Rather on one incident.

We should judge him on MANY incidents in His Career, All of them Liberaly Biased, not to mention the "Back-Stabbing",
and Dirty name-calling. Dan Rather is a Partizan Liberal
Shill for the Left wing. Piss on that dirtWAD. good riddance...Now if they can just cancel 60 min. we won't have to look at his Rotten MUG any more.

Dan bugs me "Like tics on a Texas Hounddog on a hot summer night"

Dan could appear courageous by now going after the records of Kerry and exposing that coverup.

He could either do that or openly parade himself around dressed in the many ribbons and medals awarded him by Castro and all the other despots that he has coddled all these years.

This "Courage" urge of Dan's is despised by all, right and left, because it rings as hollow as a rotted Texas piney woods dead tree in The Big Thicket.

For those of you who would like to see just how much fake and false news Dan has promoted over the years go to www.ratherbiased.com, but hurry, he feels his job is done now that Dan is "retired" and may shut down the site. It is the best collection of Rather lies and deceits I have see yet.

He continued his lies right to the end of his last show. "Courage," he has none.

One effect of the Information Age is a heightened public appreciation for the articulate and credible voices of great, clear, and truthful minds, such as that of Thomas Sowell, which identify, by startling contrast, the mediocre-to-shallow, muddled, untruthful, and manipulative minds of so many whose voices are heard in the public discourse, notably in "journalism", politics, academic institutions, and among "celebrities".

Heightened public awareness of such contrasts and heightened public perceptiveness promise changes resulting from the Information Age as profound as those that resulted from the printing press, and such heightened awareness and perceptiveness are merely a small part of what's happening.

They should have fired him instead of letting him retire. As it stands now his future association with '60 minutes' will destroy any credibility it currently has left.
