iPod Mini, Mac Mini, iBook Mini?
Cnet ^ | 03/10/2005 | Scott Ard

Ignoring threats of a lawsuit (or perhaps encouraging the publicity), an Apple Computer-focused Web site called PowerPage reported Tuesday that the maker of the iPod Mini and Mac Mini is prepping a diminutive laptop.

Saying it has received "details of a secret development team planning specifications for the release of a new mini laptop," PowerPage reports that the machine will run a skinny version of Mac OS X, which includes handwriting-recognition capability.

Such a product would not be out of step with Apple's direction. Not only has the company previously produced a similar product, the Apple eMate 300, but it seems to be on a mini kick as witnessed by the iPod Mini and the Mac Mini. (It's doubtful the company is considered a Mac or iBook Shuffle.)

Apple, as you may have a heard once or twice, does not comment on rumors or speculation. It does, however, have a habit of suing Web sites for distributing what it considers trade secrets dressed up as news items. So the next step in determining whether an iBook Mini is in your future is to watch for any lawsuits against PowerPage.

Hey, I would buy an iBook Shuffle. It would just pop up programs and saved documents at random. I mean, life is unpredictable, why shouldn't my OS be unpredictable as well? Plus it would surely have a really cool plastic case and cute little circular interface, and would contrast nicely with my solid-black wardrobe... Neato!

Course, Windows ME was pretty unpredictable too, so they may be getting into a pretty well exploited market...

Apple's innovation will put them ahead of MSFT in the consumer market.

1) Apple should introduce a game console sooner rather than later
2) Can iPod access iTunes directly without a need for the PC to download music on the go.
3) Will it be possible for 2 iPods to share music over wifi?

Any more ideas? Will someone from Apple read this? Is there an Apple FReeper?

If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand anyway.

"2) Can iPod access iTunes directly without a need for the PC to download music on the go."

- Something close to that, Motorola is releasing an iTunes enables cell phone. It was supposed to introduce it this week, but it has been pushed back due to some issues to be resolved with some carriers.

Besides being superior to other mp3 players, there is nothing novel about being able to carry over 200 cd's in the palm of my hand everytime I walk out of the door.

Dang. I had to send one of my iPods back to Apple for repair (I slept on it listening to a book and crushed the touch wheel).

The nerve of that company! Even though it was nearly a year old, they sent a new one by FedEx from their manufacturing facility and it was delivered this morning on the exact date they said they would have it back to me!

I fully understand technology and im not some old fart who hates anything new. Im 27 and in the technology sector (web/application development). I just dont see anything fancy about it. Its a reinvention of the wheel and marketed like its something new.

The iPaq/Palm/Blackberry is pretty novel. They can do what an iPod does yet they also can function a multitude of other functions. That's novel. iPods and those types of products that play mp3's or wmv's are just whoopity doo to me.

You are in the wrong industry. Incremental invention is the only thing that will keep you employed. Take it from this 'old fart' who has more hours on the keyboard than you've been alive. Best of luck.

I guess thats why I dont see the greatness in that because whenever I do listen to music, im at a PC where I dont need some player. In the car I listen to talk radio (sports mainly). I should excercise but I dont right now (been working lots) so I cant see its use until I do some running or something.

I remember the hype about the walkman back when it became popular because it was "music where ever you go". The iPod is exactly that...only more music.

I would have to hand it to Apple...they sure know how to hype something like its the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I know what you are saying. Incremental advancement in technology is fine...its the over hyped "wow, this is the best thing ever made" attitude consumers have regarding it. The marketing is superb...I give them credit.

I guess im just not as impressed by incremental technology as some.

Try to use some imagination and realize that just because you don't use it does not make it worthless. For me I kinda like having all the music I own in one easy package everywhere I go. I can plug it into my car stereo. I can wear it jogging. I can take it on a plane. I can use it on a train. I have books on tape on there. I have dozens of genre of music. Is has a lot of usefulness for some people. Some people would get none out of it just as some people have no use for a bike or a submarine or a spaceshuttle.

Ditto all that.

Never thought I'd own -- much less love -- an Apple product, but my 4th G iPod & I are inseparable.

You should probably sprinkle a few more "allegedly"s and so forth in there - don't want FR to get sued, now do we? ;)
