Some U.S. Marines say they were surprised by the decision made by Detroit auto workers about parking. It all started with the cars some Marines drove, and what was on them.

The words that have some U.S. Marines in shock came from the man in charge of security at the UAW Solidarity House, on Jefferson in Detroit. For a number of years now, dozens of Marine reservists have been thankful to park in the UAW's lot for weekend training with no problem at all - until now.

Marines at nearby Marine Corps Reserve Center say on Tuesday morning, the director of security at the UAW told them that while they support the troops, Marines driving foreign vehicles or sporting a President George Bush bumper sticker were no longer welcome to park there.

Part of the UAW's statement: "While reservists certainly have the right to drive non-union made vehicles and display bumper stickers touting the most anti-worker, anti-union president since the 1920s, that doesn't mean they have the right to park in a lot owned by members of the UAW."

Now, I've been in many auto plant parking areas and the cars of many UAW members are foreign and a few even have Bush bumber stickers.

I've been thinking of replacing my old F-150 with a new one. I guess I'll start looking at the full size Nissans and Toyotas. These UAW Commies don't deserve my hard earned money!

Keep your old F-150. Pickups were meant to be used and one that's broken in is best.

Meanwhile I'll bet the rank and file union members will "correct" this misunderstanding PDQ. Give it a day or two. A lot of union employees are ex military and I don't think they'll let this stand.

You give 'em too much credit upfront. Rank and file boys don't usually buck the union goons, do they?

UAW Liberals: "The First Amendment applies to everybody but conservatives, Republicans, libertarians and Ann Coulter. And some pigs are more equal than others."

Get another F-150 and put a pro-republican candidate sticker on it or better yet, edit the "Live Better, Work Union" sticker to read "Live Better, Work." I have a 2004 F-150 and it is a sweet ride.

I am on the side of the reservists, having been one myself and retired from the reserves. But I have a couple of questions.

1. Is there insufficient parking on the reserve drilling site for the reservists? If so, why?

2. Assuming there is insufficient parking, what does the reserve commandeer intend to do to make more spaces available to drilling reservists?

3. If the UAW objects to political stickers favoring President Bush, and to foreign made vehicles on its parking lots, something should have been said before they started threatening to tow vehicles. But suppose the situation were reversed, and UAW members wanted to park their vehicles on a military base. Does anyone think the U.S. Military would allow open parking to UAW vehicles on a Military base? Would a base commander have problems with a lot of vehicles on the base with Kerry/Edwards stickers?

Don't be too sure friend. The union goons do what their fuhrers tell them to do. They are the reason, in large part, we have our current dismal canadian governor in Michigan. I hope I'm wrong about this. I was a UAW committeeman (steward) for several years. The UAW upper management is loyal only to the union, most particularily themselves. They could care less about America regardless of their public face.

No problem.
I'm sure the marines, when necessary, will save all their butts, no matter what bumper sticker they sport, or what kind of vehicle they drive...

Yes they do, on something like this. Give it a day or two and follow up on it. I'll bet you my paycheck this changes.

The industrial unions are in a steep decline (only 8 percent of private sector employees are unionized) and lash out at whatever they can find in frustration.

Good move, UAW. That's why more folks would prefer to own a a US-made foreign car (Honda, Toyota, BMW, etc.) produced by a quality-conscious associate in a lab coat than a car produced by a UAW goon.
