Hundreds of blank driver's licenses have been stolen from a DMV office in North Las Vegas. Nevada's Homeland Security office expressed concern about this robbery Monday night.
More than 1,700 blank licenses are missing from this DMV. The concerns are identity theft, illegal immigration and the possibility of terrorism. Along with the blank licenses the thieves made off with equipment needed to make the IDs.
Shattered glass, tire marks, and brown boards mark where the thieves broke through the DMV's large windows. What you won't see are the cameras to take driver's licenses, a computer, and a printer, all were stolen in the early morning hours.
Kevin Malone, with the DMV, can't say if this was an inside job, but does say the thieves knew what they wanted. "I would say so. It pretty much looks like they had a plan and got out very quick."

In Illinois this would never happen. You'd just fork over some cash and get yerself a license. Or at least thats what happened until recently.

Assuming they keep a good security protocol (I'm sure they don't) there shouldn't be allot the thieves can do with the equipment.

How did they defeat the alarm and open the safe?
There was no alarm?
There was no safe?
There was no brains?
There are how many terminations?

I would expect that the theives are now matching those licences to the data stolen from Choicepoint(?) and taking photos of some Ali Attas even as I type.
This is serious.

According to the Las Vegas Radio stations, it was planned carefully.
A vehicle was driven through a window, the needed items were grabbed and away they went.
It appears that they got all they needed to make the licenses, but will need the DMV computer to complete the job.
I thought they said the vehicle went thru the employees break room window, that would work, everyone would go to see
the accident.
Las Vegas does have a major illegal problem and all the California gangs.

There are concerns of terrorism. Eyewitness News contacted Nevada Homeland Security and they learned of the break-in through Channel 8 Eyewitness News.Homeland Security learned of the break-in from the news station and not the cops??!! ~groan~

"Homeland Security learned of the break-in from the news station and not the cops??!! ~groan~"! We are in good hands. NOT.

"The state is extremely sorry that this has happened," Lewis said. "Those motorists whose data was on that computer need to know their personal information has been compromised."
Extremely sorry? First of all, the state is liable for letting this break in occur with such little security. Second, why on earth is the data stored on the local computer instead of on the internet somewhere else? This would have meant that a break in at the local office would have yielded a computer box and that is all.
