Hah, I am looking forward to getting a roommate next month so I can spend $150 a month, instead of just $50, on anime. My poor pocketbook - there are two series coming out now I have to buy, plus the "Full Metal Panic Perfect Collection" next month.

Steamboy should be good! Hope there's a theater near me showing it. I'll almost certainly go see "Howl". I want to see what Miyazaki-san has done with the source material.

Disney doing a Christian film?

This ought to be a hoot.

My family followed the LOTR closely. Games, books costumes..all made at home. When we found out about the proclivities of the actor who played Gandalf, it changed the last movie for us. It gave us a distance we didn't have with the first two. Oh we watched it, but it was different. They had somehow "soiled" our story by trying to normalize something that we felt was "ours."

Looks like they are going to "soil" another story.

I read this account with the same degree of suspicion as reports of Zarqawi's arrest.

Remind me again why this is suppoesed to be a problem?

And when she's out promoting the film, you don't think the subject will come up?

No, I am not aware of that film.

Why is his career dead? I dont really follow films and rarely watch...Although I bought and saw Napoleon Dynamite yesterday and laughed so hard that I cried.

Look on e-bay for Howl in Japanese when it is released to DVD. That's where we got our collection. It was only 50.00 for 10 movies of the original Ghibli collection and Spirited Away. I have rented Spirited Away in English (and saw it in the theater) but again I make them watch it as is.

When I watched "The Cat Returns" all I could think of is how much better it would be with Haru in Japanese. Although I have to admit that Cary Elwes made the Baron just HOT!

Have your mom watch "Grave of the Fireflies". She will know that anime is serious. Did you know that "My Neighbor Totoro" was released with "Grave" in Japan?!? Can you imagine a darling story about happy children shown with a depressing story of children in WWII Japan?

Ack! You bought a bootleg!

I can't say this with 100% certainty, but 95%+ of anime that's available on ebay is bootlegged. Did it come all in one box, which folds out, and maybe two movies per disk? And are there Chinese subtitles or Chinese characters on the back?

I know the real stuff is expensive, but bootlegs are produced by the Chinese mafia, not the world's nicest people.

I'm not sure I'll be up for watching "Grave of the Fireflies" again any time this decade, which is why I haven't watched it with Mom.

If you like anime movies, you might like to start branching out into series. I've seen a lot so if you're interested, I can recommend a few for you. There's a lot of lousy stuff, all right, but a lot of good stuff too, shows that would just never be produced here because there's no audience for it.

Wow, my hubby is computer geek No.1 and has a thing about copying software. I have to keep it quiet. Crap!

Disney screws up everything they touch. They'll be gay characters or worse.

Just don't say anything about it. ;-)

Don't feel too bad. Most anime buyers make that mistake once or twice at the beginning - hah, I should have known that complete set of "Rurouni Kenshin" for $90 was too good to be true. I lucked out and got decent subtitles, but a lot of bootlegs are unwatchable because the subtitles are so bad. Everyone I know has one or two bootlegs on their shelves - it's almost a rite of passage, you say "Look how cheaply I got this!" and an older and wiser friend tells you the truth...

But anyway we aren't doing ourselves any favors. If we like Miyazaki's healthy family films, we have to buy the legitimate versions to "send a message" to Disney that we want more of that...

Where did you read she was a lesbian?

Google

Tilda Swinton + lesbian = Planetout.com

Looks like she's had a lot of lesbian roles.

And just to back up my statement about going to see it in theaters: I subjected myself to Ghost in the Shell: Innocence and Appleseed to help the cause!

I want to see GITS:Innocence at some point, but Appleseed didn't appeal to me much. But if the Inuyasha movie gets released to theaters, I don't care about principles, I'm not seeing that.

I see you're not getting much support on here but I agree with you. The fact that she is lesbian means nothing to me. I love the Narnia books and will be seeing this film.

Disney? The same Disney boycotted by the SBC? IMHO this is a lame attempt at gaining/regaining dollars from a targeted audience (i.e. Southern Baptists). I personally don't have any grievances towards Disney, but this... does not bode well.

It is also disturbing that they would tackle works by C.S. Lewis. I think I would rather see a Chronicles of Narnia done by Peter Jackson!

Besides, if Disney wants to make a Kids' Passion, they should start by looking at Mel Gibson's work and making it G-rated.
