I still do not understand the connection between your patriotism and your screwed-up life.

The way I read it, he feels like the system screwed him and therefore the since that one part of the country is messed up, he cannot respect the rest of it. Since there is no moral high ground to him, because the family court system is broken, there is no reason to get worked up about everything else.
At least, thats the way I understood it.

He thinks America is only worth defending if it is perfect, and notices that it isn't, so he thinks it isn't worth defending. He wants other people to go win all his battles for him, and transform the US into something perfect that does whatever he wants. If we do so, he might deign to love it again. In other words, he hasn't the slightest idea what loyalty is. "The universe is not a lodging house at Brighton, that we should leave if it is miserable. It is the fortress of our family, with our flag flying on the turret - and the more miserable it is the less we should leave it." GK Chesterton

I sense that explaining further to you would be pointless. If you don't get it then you either need to have another look at the 14th amendment in the context of these issues or just head back off trying to reserve a front row seat at the next RNC and forget everything else...

His ex-wife screwed him over and he's taking it out on America. Weird, but there you are.
