Cong. Solomon Ortiz, Southern Border is under Siege"
LOU DOBBS/CNN ^ | 3/04/05 | Transcript-aired 3/4/5

Posted on 03/05/2005 8:59:04 AM PST by JustAnotherSavage

Congressman Solomon Ortiz of Texas testified this week during a House hearing on border security saying our southern border is under siege. Congressman Ortiz is co-chair of the House Border Caucus.

ORTIZ: I am very dismayed, very discouraged, because we were led to believe that they were going to fund the recommendations given by the 9/11 commission. Now, they came up with 210 border patrol people, that doesn't even cover attrition rates in one border patrol sector.

DOBBS: And you before your committee pointed out Admiral Loy's concerns about border security, specifically the threat of terrorism, al Qaeda linking up with various rogue elements in Central and South America. How concerned are you?

ORTIZ: Very, very concerned, because we know what the Mara Salvatruca can do. And what they have done in the past.

Now, these gangs will probably do anything for the right amount of money. And when you leave a wide gap of unprotected border, because when 15, 20, clusters of immigrants come in, those border patrolmen stationed at the border, they have to move to process these individuals coming in and that leaves the border wide open. And you know what? We don't know who's coming in.

DOBBS: It is certainly an extraordinarily irrational situation in which the government is not enforcing immigration laws. The Homeland Security Department is not controlling our borders. And I will tell you, Congressman our audience, our viewers are outraged at what is happening and demand for something to be done. What is it going to take, in your opinion. Must every one of our viewers, must everyone in this country write their Congressmen and senators and say let's do something about securing this nations and ports? What's required?

"ORTIZ: Well, I have a bill that I have introduced that will do just that. But again I agree with you, getting the Congress to do something to approve this bill is something else.

Let me give you another example, Lou. There is an area between Alaska and British Columbia that has not one single border patrol agent. Not one. I hate to be the one to come back later on and say I told you so. I hope it doesn't take another Twin Towers to realize we have serious problems.

Because like I said, we know that there's information out there that the Mara Salvatruca, the M-13 is trying to set up meetings and sometimes we get information that they have met with al Qaeda. But, you know, they're smart and they know how to play the game. They know exactly when the border is open and they're coming across.

Now, we do know we have sleeper cells in the United States. My God, what is if going to take so that we can respond? Another disaster? We can't wait for that to happen, Lou."

I saw the Rep. on Dobbs and this, along with a number of other guests that have been appearing with frequency and who are really flogging the disgraceful state of our border security AND Immigration policy, has made the Dobbs show a must view.

His recent emphasis on CAFTA is another issue that has been flying under the radar but is getting a much needed airing on the show. I recommend it as necessary viewing for the few FROBL's.

DOBBS: Well, my next guest shares those concerns, and he testified before the committee today. T.J. Bonner is president of the National Border Patrol Council, and he is an active Border Patrol agent, facing all of the issues that our men and women in the Border Patrol face each day. Joining us from Washington, good to have you with us.

T.J. BONNER, PRES., NATIONAL BORDER PATROL COUNCIL: Good to be here

. DOBBS: It is interesting to hear Democrats and Republicans alike now focusing on their concerns about border security.

BONNER: Interesting and very heartening. Bear in mind, this is a proposal from the president, and I'm hopeful that the Congress will see the light and do the right thing. This proposal is just shameful. I'm upset both as a citizen and especially as a Border Patrol agent. That's my life and the lives of my fellow Border Patrol agents that are being -- that are on the line every day, and we need reinforcements desperately, and the president is just giving us 5 percent of what the Congress approved last year and the president signed into law.

DOBBS: What is going on here, T.J.? The president is simply ignoring -- and it is not by -- you know, there's no coincidence here, the president has chosen not -- not -- to secure our borders. Why is that decision, as best you can under it, going on?

BONNER: I have no idea why he cannot make the connection between border security and homeland security. It's clear as day to everyone else.

DOBBS: Well, is it because we also have Democrats and Republicans in Congress who have not insisted on either border security and demanded it, because certainly they can in a common voice, nor have they insisted upon real reform of our immigration laws, if they are such, and certainly not to enforce those laws.

BONNER: I think there's enough blame to be spread all around Capitol Hill, but the president has to take a leadership role in this, and he simply hasn't.

DOBBS: What does it do to the morale of our Border Patrol agents to see, as you said, a 5 percent increase in what has been authorized in Border Patrol funding for agents?

BONNER: It takes morale that's already at the lowest point that I have ever seen it in my 27-year career, and it plunges it even further, if that were possible, and it is.

DOBBS: You pointed out that there's some reason for hope here. You have been working on these issues in Washington for some time now. Do you believe that there has been a breakthrough now amongst the members of Congress?

BONNER: It's very heartening to see the members on both sides of the aisle join together in recognition of the fact that we need a lot more personnel down on the border, to help secure our border, and speak with one voice. And I'm hopeful that we will have that restored, as well as the $80 million that the president is proposing to cut from the Border Patrol's budget this year. That, in addition to the $20 million that he did cut last year.

DOBBS: Remarkable. T.J. Bonner, we thank you for being here.

BONNER: Thank you for having me.

I saw this interview. Again, the FROBL's can ignore it all they want. Thankfully they are a very small minority here and in the population in general, albeit loud and disruptive. I've long suspected a couple are operating under multiple FR ID's and I'm certain more than a few are DU'ers here to foment chaos.

There is an area between Alaska and British Columbia that has not one single border patrol agent.

There are many miles of land border between the U.S. and Canada/Mexico. However there are very few miles of land border between Canada/Mexico/U.S. and any other country (Belize/Guatemala).

The lack of terrorist attacks on U.S. land over the last 3 1/2 years is not based on U.S. border security with Mexico/Canada. The lack of terrorist attacks on U.S. land over the last three years is based on tight security at airports and seaports in all three countries(Mexico/Canada/U.S.) plus tighter controls on a much smaller boarder (~400 miles)Belize/Guatemala. That's a much easier accomplishment.

That's the only answer I can see to the success we've had up to this point.

Rush is the greatest. However, Rush ridiculed speaking out against "this" for years. Even as late as last fall.

Malkin & Dobbs have MSM written all over them.

BTW, it is not JUST Conservatives who are outraged about Illegal Immigration. Most polls I've seen on the subject show a majority of Dems are also for more controls.

You are correct, but facts and testimony of those affected doesn't phase the minority opposition. They won't be satisfied until more blood is shed instead of enforcing the law.

Unfortunately your both correct and incorrect. You should have added "and until the profiteers make billions more."

That article about sending them back by the "plane loads" is a joke. Did you read it?

Ana Ortega left here for the USA 14 years ago. She never thought she'd return, much less like this: in handcuffs and ankle shackles, on a U.S. government jet with 49 others whose criminal convictions got them deported from the USA.

A plane load is not 49 people, especially when millions are crossing in illegally. When you find an article where they are using a C-130 (and full), let me know.

"You should have added "and until the profiteers make billions more."

That of course is the bottom line. There has always been that number of capitalists without concience of what their destruction brings to their fellow Americans. In the 1800's they were called carpetbaggers.

Time magazine quote:
“The number of illegal aliens flooding into the US this year will total 3 million - enough to fill 22,000 Boeing 727-700 airliners, or 60 flights every day for a year.”
