He must be in the first 10 assault waves - they get rifles. Behind them, the troops only get magazines for the rifles - they're expected to pick up those from their dead comrades.

If that's a SKS with a traditional design and no modifications beyond the stock, then they'll get stripper clips, not magazines. I don't know what happened to the initial picture in comment# 1. I could view it before I posted the article. Maybe they changed the URL?
