Washington Post columnist Courtland Milloy certainly is no conservative or traditionalist, but in reviewing a book about the unspoken sexual liaisons between black men - many of whom are married or have girlfriends -- Milloy wrote, "If black women are worried, and angry, about this sickening state of affairs, who can blame them? Let's hope their concern translates into an insistence on the use of condoms -- if not outright abstinence."
When someone such as Milloy speaks of abstinence as a desired action, it provides a ray of hope that common sense is starting to take hold in our country when it comes to sex.
Certainly, the statistics he presented in his article provide him with good reason to make his statement.
AIDS is racing through the black community at a furious pace. It's among the top three causes of death for black women 35 to 44.
Thomas R. Frieden, MD, the New York City Commissioner of Health and Mental Hygiene, recently said, "AIDS is the leading cause of death for black men age 34-44 years, and among all women who die from the disease, more than half are black." New York City's known AIDS population is 88,000 -- people of all races -- but black women represent two-thirds of all new HIV diagnoses and the rate of new HIV diagnoses for black men is 43%.
While America carouses, people are dying needless deaths all because too many people in our society have lost their moral anchors. HIV/AIDS is most certainly not limited to the black community, although that community presently is suffering the most.

I think the author misunderstood it, also.
I had to read that about six times too. I think they mean this:
New infections
Women 66 2/3 % black 33 1/3% white/hispanic
Men 43% black 57% white/hispanic
it's all bush's fault
"two thirds + 43% = 109% Am I misunderstanding the sentence?"
Is this AIDS or how they vote in Philly?
