This is a [multiple expletives deleted] disgrace, but it's nothing new for Apple. Back in '87, I bought an (expensive!) Apple IIgs at the end my senior year of high school, and by about (ironically) 18 months later, it wouldn't keep date, time, or other CMOS settings.

I took it to the local computer store, whose owner said the only way to fix it was to replace the motherboard (!!!). There was a $5 lithium cell SOLDERED TO THE MOTHERBOARD. Talk about planned obsolescence! This sort of crap borders on outright theft, with a heaping helping of deception thrown on to boot.

Well, it turns out the tech only half right. Instead of forking over ~$250 for a new mobo, I nipped the battery off and alligator-clipped a $2 Radio Shack battery box's leads to the stubs. A pair of D-cells did the job just fine for the next 18 months. That is, until I finally just got sick of the CRAPPY PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE and CONSTANT CRASHES, and dumped Apple forever. Good job with the customer relations, Apple!

Batteries are consumables and should be treated as such. You wouldn't buy a car if the wheels were welded to the hubs! Actually, this is more akin to a gas tank that may hold a thousand gallons or so, but it has no filler pipe!

Apple's miserable quality may have chased me off, but their arrogance will keep me away, permanently! Re: the movie, they've got a lot of 'nads giving their phone-bot a script like that one to read!

Puh-leeze. There are all sorts of free market solutions to this problem. Go Google one up, and don't succumb to TV news hype.

This must be some sort of copyright strategy since the ipod battery issue has been going on for years.

Why else would they continue to leave such a defect in their product?

I'm almost willing to believe that Apple is behind the 18 month/$250 battery replacement story/movie.

It sure makes their $99 replacement seem reasonable to the dimwitted.

THis is OLD news that is fixed... iPod batteries can be replaced by both Apple and third party sources... you can even do it yourself if you aren't too squeemish about popping open your case. Cost is about $30.

And if you ignite a model rocket engine in a gas-soaked iPod battery compartment, they EXPLODE too!

This Report is BS

I replaced mine with one I bought on Ebay. It even came with a case opening tool and directions. It isn't exactly the easiest thing in the world, but it's not rocket science either.

Q: Is the iPod's battery replaceable?

A: Yes. Apple has an
official battery replacement program for $99. The program requires that you send in your iPod (any model), and Apple will replace the battery and return it to you for $99 (technically, Apple actually replaces your whole iPod with an equivalent new or refurbished model). AppleCare programs for iPod are also available in some markets outside the US, and are expected soon in other markets.

Q: Is the iPod's battery user-replaceable?

A1: Yes and no. The iPod's case is not designed to be opened, so, in that respect, it's not what would generally be referred to as "user-replaceable". But, the case can be opened, and there are several third parties that offer replacement batteries for the iPod for as low as $30, such as:

Lame complaint. Yes, the batteries are going to die eventually. You laptop battery will eventually die. Your cellphone battery will eventually die. Your camera batteries will eventually die. Your car battery will eventually die.

Tell me a device where the battery doesn't eventually die!

As for the Apple iPod, replacing the battery is a piece of cake. Take a tiny flattip screwdriver and pry the cover loose (look on the web for instructions on where to pry for your particular iPod model). Took me all over 30 seconds to get my iPod open and another three or four minutes to take out the old battery. The cover then very nicely popped back in place.

Y-A-W-N...are there people out there with REAL problems?

All rechargable batteries wear out, all of them. Even the long lived wet-cell battery in your automobile has a lifespan.

You know, Ipod users seem to be very selectively inept. On the one hand, Ipods are great because of how easy they are supposed to be to use - all of the other alternatives out there are just too dang hard to work with. But when there's a battery problem, everyone is supposed to be able to handle it all of a sudden.
