Ice floe strands 30 anglers on Lake Erie

OAK HARBOR, Ohio (AP) -- About 30 ice fishermen on Lake Erie had to be rescued on Friday after a huge chunk of ice broke away and drifted about four miles off shore, the Coast Guard said.

Rescue crews used boats and a helicopter to rescue the anglers and bring them to shore, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Paul Gimple. They also brought in a dog with one of the fishermen. No injuries were reported.

One person who fell in the water was rescued by other fishermen, said Senior Chief James Bordell of the Coast Guard's Marblehead Station.

The ice floe, about 10 miles wide, broke away about 10 miles east of Toledo near the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge when winds started kicking up in the morning.

It's that time of year again, boys.
The groundhog saw his shadow...
Don't worry, the fish'll still be there AFTER the ice melts.

Good news, bad news. Bad news that they got stranded, good news that the ice is breaking up.

Naturally, their story will be that "the one that got away" was so huge that it actually pulled the ice floe away.

Proof of man's inability to learn:

1. Ice fishing on Lake Erie in late February (this happens often)
2. Building a home on a California hillside (for absolutely huge sums of money)
3. Building a home in a flood plain
4. Building a home on a volcano
5. Building a home on the ocean front (for absolutely huge sums of money)
6. Driving past "road closed ahead" signs (those signs must be for some other road some other place).
7. Driving drunk on New Year's Eve (every cop in the world is out working).
8. Buying Chicago Cubs World Series tickets.
9. Voting democrat.

Yup, rescuing ice fisherman is a traditional Spring ritual.
It's easier to predict than the rising sun.

From the story at the link:

"Most of the anglers were forced to leave their all-terrain vehicles, fishing shanties and the rest of their gear behind on the ice."

The banks and the insurance companies are not going to be pleased...

But what about their vehicles?

What about what the stranded vehicles will DO TO THE ENVIRONMENT when they sink? (gasp)

If Bush would've signed Kyoto and Americans stopped driving SUVs, this wouldn't have happened!

(Sorry - this is complete sarcasm)

got asked to go ice fishing the other day - said no thanks and they asked WHY? You afraid of falling in?

I said - nope = can't fall in if I don't go out on the ice, thanks anyway.

"...asked to go ice fishing the other day"

I went ice fishing once...all I caught was funny looking critters that flopped around gasping for air.
