Local Governments Want to Set Own Limits as Supporters Seek to Protect Clubs Hoping to Expand

RICHMOND -- When Dee Papit moved to her rural home in Hanover County a decade ago, she knew life, in some ways, would be a little more inconvenient in the country. No more morning strolls to the coffee shop she had enjoyed in Richmond. Maybe a longer drive to the store to buy the weekly groceries.
She even adjusted to the bursts of gunfire from the outdoor shooting range nearby.
But over the past several years, the rat-a-tat-tat from the Cavalier Rifle and Pistol Club has increased as its membership has grown, to the point that the noise "becomes unbearable," she said. But because the club is grandfathered into county ordinances on noise levels, there is nothing she can do about what she describes as a "constant nuisance."
"I know they were here first, but what happens if they ever want to add more ranges on their property?" said Papit, 47, a marketing consultant whose 25-acre farm is about a two-hour drive south of the District. "The noise could get even worse."

House Bill 2282, sponsored by Del. William R. Janis (R-Goochland), would establish a statewide noise standard for outdoor shooting ranges. The measure would prevent local governments from setting their own noise standards.

Simple. Legalize silencers.
"If" and "could get worse"?
That's the best they can come up with?
To make a long story short, some yuppie couple sued their farmer neighbor because his early work schedule was disturbing their Saturday slumber. That was nothing, however, compared to the aroma of fresh manure in the springtime, since the yups' abode was downwind of the farm.
In my in-laws county, they mail prospective homebuyers a scratch and sniff manure card. Basically it says, "this is what your new home will smell like. If you don't like it, buy somewhere else."
Then move back to the city, for cripe's sakes. Why do you think the city sucks so much? It's because it's full of idiots like yourself.
Bringing your stupidity out to the country isn't going to make anything better, you'll just end up having screwed up both places for everybody.
Now Dominion Power wants to get clearance to build another nuclear reactor, and folks are up in arms. Some person had the audacity to oppose the new reactor based on its supposed impact on the Lake that was created in order to provide water for the nuclear plants. Talked about possible lowering of the water level.
The Noise Nazis are at it again. Summon the militia!

Glad I'm not the only one that sees it this way. Good rant!
"But anyone from Maine can just buy a gun without a permit?" she says. "Yes," the clerk replied.
"I think that's DISGUSTING!" the woman said haughtily.
Well, the clerk can't say anything of course, but I mumbled, loud enough for her to hear: "Then go back to Massachusetts." The fellow next to me said something about as disparaging.
She look SHOCKED that one of the country hicks would DARE talk back to her, and she stormed off.
It was a delightful moment, indeed. I am sure she went back to Weston or wherever and horrified her library club with the tale about the wild-west Neanderthals that are running amok in Maine.
And I am sure that she thinks that something needs to be done about us.
Great story. These people will say almost anything. They feel as if they're entitled to stomp all over anyone who is the least bit different than they are. If we acted toward them like they do toward us, they all would have either committed suicide or started a civil war by now.
but propose that all members of the club get a silencer ( it's not THAT hard ) and they'll change their complaint to "the smell of cordite" or "dangers of stray rounds" or something.

I strike up conversations with women and men checking out the binoculars at Wal-Mart while I'm buying ammo. "So, you going shooting this weekend? What do you mean you don't like guns? Is it the color scheme?"
I'm gonna get arrested for sure one of these times...
They are legal. If you want to do the paperwork, wait until its processed, and pay your $200 tax on top of the price of the silencer.
As far as having people know if you are carrying - the last thing you need to do is to run into a hyped-up adrenelin-overloded cop who thinks that his best chance of going home alive tonight is to shoot you first.
As for "hyped-up" cops, these days... it seems there are plenty that'll shoot you no matter what you do. And yet, I'd still go to an officers aid in a bad situation. I'd like to thhink that'd engender a certain spirit of reciprocity.
