Undersize me!
EDMONTON SUN ^ | February 18, 2005 | AJAY BHARDWAJ

Les Sayer hasn't cheated on his McDonald's-only diet. Not an apple, an orange, a cantaloupe or grapes in 17 days. Sayer, a teacher at NorQuest College and Metro Continuing Education, wanted to drive home the point to students that Morgan Spurlock's documentary, Supersize Me, was an opinion piece. He said he could eat McDonald's food for a month and lose weight, not gain it.

"The main reason for doing this is because my students thought (Supersize Me) was an objective piece," the 39-year-old Sayer said yesterday.

Sixteen days into the diet, Sayer says he's lost 13 pounds - he's down to 222 pounds from his 235 - and his blood pressure has dropped to 134/73 from 136/88.

His secret? One hour in the gym doing cardiovascular exercise and weight training five to six times weekly.

"The big surprise for me was the blood pressure."

Sayer has steadily chowed down on Big Macs, Bacon and Egg McMuffins and Chicken McNuggets.

"The magic here is in the exercise," he said. "The average Joe doesn't exercise."

Sayer said he's not being paid by McDonald's nor is he affiliated with the fast-food giant. But he said he has caught a lot of flak for taking on the diet.

"Some people are upset because they think I'm pandering to a huge, large corporation," he said.

"It's not McDonald's food that's unhealthy. It's the lifestyle you lead."

Sayer said the main message is that you should eat and enjoy a variety of foods as long as you exercise.

Ruth West, a registered dietitian at the Grey Nuns Hospital, said people who want to lose weight should be eating a variety of foods to benefit from all nutrients.

West said Sayer is likely expending more energy than he's consuming.

Too much common sense here.

Supersize Me was hailed as groundbreaking, but it was just obvious and pointless. OF COURSE if you eat lots of fast food while deliberately doing absolutely no exercise and even taking the shortest route possible when walking around your house you're going to gain weight. Why did anybody think that was so revolutionary and brave?

Because nobody had ever made a stinkin' movie about it.

No, really?

And it is likely to be dark after sunset.

"West said Sayer is likely expending more energy than he's consuming."

With groundbreaking thoughts like these, she must be skinny as a rail.

When I came in the US and landed my first [minimum wage] job, I was able - finally - to eat at McDonald's, and for a couple weeks I ate there twice a day. This experience served me as an inoculation against fast food joints, for I cannot stand the sight of them ever since, far less eat in one.

I saw that movie and thought that anal retentive idiot was totally over doing the acting, especially when he eats the food in the car and goes into his vomit spiel. Please, spare me. Go see the Nathans hot dog eating contest every July 4th in Coney Island and tell me how many people there vomit after eating 20-30-50 hotdogs. Absolutely none, unless they force themselves afterwards. I see it every year. Curtis Sliwa the Gaurdian Angels guy eats his brains out and I`ve never seen him puke once. A guy eating a single freggin big mac, fries and a soda isn`t going to puke unless he wants to.

It's all about exercise, and it always has been.

That still doesn't explain the high accolades being heaped on the guy. I could make a movie that no one's made before about how if you throw your computer out of a 5th floor office window it will break (but give you a tremedous sense of victory!) but that doesn't mean I've made a groundbreaking, brave movie the way Hollywood is insisting Spurlock did. I just don't get it.

I don't know what's more amusing-the registered dietician's revolutionary thinking or the reporter who thought that statement was insightful enough to include in the article.

" if you throw your computer out of a 5th floor office window it will break (but give you a tremedous sense of victory!)"

If you push it as an allegory of the workers victory over the techno-capitalist elite, you'll probably win something at Cannes.

Actually "Supersize Me" was groundbreaking in that someone figured out how to get people to pay to watch him become a fat pig.

Yes, he needs to get to a Hardee's where he can get a real burger, or at least load up on a sack of Krystals.

I walked out halfway through Supersize Me. It was more disgusting than a Big Mac.

It was not groundbreaking. Morgan Spurlock was just trying to duplicate what Michael Moore has been doing for years with his own crockumentary.
