I'm grudgingly impressed with the Sun for this level of follow-up. Let's hope they continue to pursue it.

I too was pretty surprised. But it seems like reporters have been hungry for a sold lead on O'Malley misconduct for a while now, so perhaps the saga will continue!

"On the FreeRepublic site, many posters believe Steffen was the victim of a sting operation, enticed into talking about the O'Malley rumors by MD4BUSH, whom they suspect is a Democratic operative, a Washington Post reporter, an O'Malley ally or an enemy of Steffen's posing as a rock-ribbed conservative."

And some think Steffen, an "ex important official", played with fire and got burned.

NCPAC is exposed and the world is looking for MD4BUSH?

Who's the DUmmy here?

If the writers had been truly interested in follow-up, it might have helped to correctly report what happened in the first place:
"NCPAC" didn't spread the O'Malley rumors, he merely commented on them in a thread devoted to them on this site.

As "NCPAC" wrote on Feb. 8:
"As for your other post asking why I posted certain things on FR if I knew they were wrong, please read my FR post which is quoted in the Washington Post. I never started the rumor. I was commenting on a rumor that had been out there. However, given the volatility of the situation - and knowing the blowback potential on the Governor - I opted out rather than letting him bleed further at the hands of O'Malley."

"For now, MD4BUSH will remain one of Maryland's great unsolved political questions."

I understand he's very ill.

...unususal for the Baltimore[Red]Sun to do a follow up like this....I expect it's finally getting thru to them just how irrelevant they are becoming.....we subscribe to the Sun four days a week and wouldn't do that except we need to follow land zoning in Howard County [we have a farm].....I get up every morning and drive 3 miles to the gas station to buy the Washington Times....if I don't get there by 10 o'clock it's sold out....there is no Times delivery service here so people are willing to drive in the rain to buy that paper.....that shows you the level of interest in Western Howard Co for balanced reporting....

Even semi-skilled and out-of-touch newspaper reporters - whom FReepers refer to as MSM, or mainstream media, and they don't like us "lurking" on their site, thank you very much - would have no trouble finding them.

Oh, we don't mind you lurking - we actually encourage it. You might just learn something useful. Just don't come here under the radar and pretend you're a conservative.

A little more than a week later, MD4BUSH was exchanging messages with NCPAC, hinting that he or she wanted to talk about state politics.

"We gotta be real about 2006 gonna be tough. Might need to play dirty," MD4BUSH wrote to NCPAC.

Soon the topic turned to the O'Malley rumors, with NCPAC acknowledging that some dirty play was underway.

NC, I'm curious, have you released MD4Bush's side of the FR mail conversation?

Was he the one who approached you in private mail or did you PM him first?

I'd say this more or less rules out Nitikin as MD4Bush. Certainly, I wouldn't rule it out *completely* but more or less, I do.

Doesn't FR have MD4Bush's IP address? What does that tell us?

Awesome! Thanks. As a new homeowner in Balmur and recent Va. transplant, I'm looking forward to following Md. politics more. O'Malley is quite the character. I can't wait till Ehrlich defeats him next year.

Any trolls sniffed out yet?

They seem to have pulled in their horns since the last round of zotting- but I'm sure they'll be back. Pests!
