  Course: Soc 2: Modern Social Problems

  Course Catalog Description: Examines major modern social problems and alternative solutions. Problems considered may include race, sex, age discrimination, drug abuse, poverty, deviance, sexual behavior, crime and such global problems as population, pollution and international conflict. Development of a sociological perspective for new ways of thinking about controversial matters

  Professor: Carolie Coffey

  Required? Met a General Ed./diversity/other requirement with a few course options.

  Lecture Bias: Excessive

  Comments: From the very first class meeting Ms. Coffey made it evident to us where she personally stands politically both through her lecture and the textbooks assigned to the students. Unfortunately she imposes these views and leaves no room for other rational outside contradicting perspectives. Ms. Coffey continues to provoke a hatred for the United States regime and its leaders and for a capitalistic society. She seems to coerce the students into a belief that America is an evil, racist and sexist society. I approached her after a class meeting by simply pointing out the bias in her words and material and I asked if she would be providing other positions concerning the subjects. Her reply to me was that “everything has a bias” (which to me makes the assumption that truth does not exist) and that “the issue is not debatable.” I feel as if I have to regurgitate her views on tests, etc. in order to do well in class simply because the material is solely based on her biased lectures and reading texts. I would like to note that I consider myself a liberal with many issues and cannot say that I always disagree with the instructor. However, Ms. Coffey is not teaching open minded perspectives but rather preaching her personal biased beliefs.

  Discussion Bias: Excessive

  Comments: Discussions are open to all ideas, however all opposing viewpoints will be greeted with a socially progressive rebuttal without opportunity to reply due to limited class time. She does give students opportunity to give other ideas and opinions, however there is not a time where she doesn't have the last word. The only time alternative view points are brought up is so they can be disparaged.

  Readings Bias: Excessive

  Comments: The primary textbook -Social Problems (Eitzen)- embraces a progressive viewpoint that stongly favors that of the instructor. For example in the second chapter it claims that "...the United States is an upside-down society, with the few benefiting at the expense of the many." The other textbook assigned to the students was titled: -White Privilege: Essential Readings on the Other Side of Racism (Rothenberg) - The last chapter in the this book is labeled: -How White People Can Serve as Allies to People of Color in the Struggle to End Racism- This makes the assumption that racism is solely the responsibility of White people and their duty to end it, as opposed to a collective effort by all races in the United States.

  General Comments: Also I feel the real problem here is not the actual opinions of the students or the instuctor. The problem is that Ms. Coffey is only providing half of the story to the class and not providing all rational perspectives. We, the students, are not educated in regards to modern social problems (which is why we have enrolled in the class), so we are literally being ripped-off in that we are only being provided with a part of the information.

This is a most excellent idea. A national internet registry of leftist, radical professors would prejudice their tenure at most colleges and universities and discourage them from playing the old "carny circuit" game when they've worn out their welcome with a previous employer.

Few things, not even bedding the students, are so reprehensible to a college tenure committee than a professor who's been tagged "rotten" by the student body and is having his/her courses boycotted.

Full-disclosure of biased instruction available to all prospective student customers. Put the market to work. I love it.

2/2/05 Soc 5 4 2 2 4 Horrible teacher. She demanded total control of the class like we were elementary school kids. Don't even think about grabbing something out of your backpack or shuffling through papers, she will DESTROY you. She probably spent more time yelling at people than lecturing.

1/11/05 Soc 1 5 1 1 2 Horrible, horrible, horrible. No structured lectures, no tangible class outline.. You have no idea what to expect or do. She is ancient and needs to retire! She likes to 'discuss' things so she can tell you how you are wrong.

1/6/05 Soc 2 2 1 1 3 Run away from this class. What at first seems like an incredibly interesting course, and an easy "A", turns out to be pure torture. I don't think this professor truly wants to teach - she would rather ignore and fail her students. I'm lucky I got away with a "C" - and I'm an "A" student.

12/16/04 Soc 1 2 1 1 5 I my goodness such a confussing teacher. Does not know what she is talking about. Even if you try to do good her quizzes are just to confusing. Do not take her at all. You will not pass. Believe me, she is very controlling of the class if you are late she will let everyone know and their mama!

11/22/04 Soc 1a 3 1 1 4 All I can same is Lame and concur w/ other postings... that were also negative. Most of the lame comes from her power trip to control the class. (not that it is out of line, but most students are in their 20's or later and she treats everyone as if they were 12... very anoying).

10/21/04 soc 1 2 1 1 4 She thinks she is the best sociologist in the world, and that's fine, but when we students are not able to absorb EVERY word of her crazy definitions, and EVERY word in the book, we fail or barely pass. She's the only soc instructer at cabrillo... REALLY: go somewhere else!!!

9/8/04 Soc 1A 2 1 1 Worst professor ever. Hands down. Biased, cruel, unfair, petty, angry, condescending, control freak, incredibly incompetent. I absolutely cannot believe that she is still teaching. STAY AWAY AT ALL COST! No learning, yet much torture.

Radical campus activists continue to undermine the traditional curriculum, implement speech codes that persecute politically incorrect students, enforce group-identity politics with sensitivity seminars, and treat students with a double-standard emanating from a multiculturalist perspective.

Now, however, you can do something about it.

Nominate the outrage of your choice for a Campus Outrage Award, popularly known as the "Pollys." The Grand Prize Winner will receive $1,000; four second-prize winners will each take home $500. The awards are announced April 1.
