Texas Longhorn

Texas longhorn

If you ever have to “grab a bull by the horns” try a Texas longhorn. Considering that my first post was critical of SF Chronicle's depiction of USMC General Mattis – but somehow got into a vanity section – I wouldn’t be surprised that this too gets reclassified the same way. According to some members here, I invited the Wrath of Gods upon myself on account of:

a) being new – not knowing the ropes

b) having posted a vanity as my first article

c) me being a pink, pro-communist, liberal threat to security of the United States because my name contains too many consonants

d) In my naiveté I posted my real name and a degree which most plumbers and cab drivers consider offensive, and would prefer I dropped out of high school.

Something else came to my mind watching the Oliver Stone (BOOOO! – scared ya’, didn’t I?) movie JFK, last night. OK cat lovers, donkey posters get your ammo out, this is gonna be your field day, the more pictures of animals the better. Since films ordinarily fall into the category of culture I think this is the appropriate placement for this sarcastic semi-grievance.

Meanwhile back at the ranch: JFK (BOO! Scared you again) the movie revolves around this New Orleans District attorney Jim Garrison – a true life character. By all accounts the director (Stone) and this Garrison were more pink than pink, and therefore enemies to certain forums that enjoy posting pictures of domestic animals. But something unexpected happened. This Garrison (as pink as you want to make him) took the bull by the horns and strongly fought for what he believed. Contrary to the general perception that he may have been a “pinko” in his real life, I see, his fight, his irreverence, his stubbornness, his strong moral adherence to protecting the Laws of our country, his clash with the FBI, as the very essence of a good radical warrior who just happens to be on the wrong side of the fence (providing I ever grant anybody to put up a fence between me and my country). I would want that man on my side, no matter what side I choose to be on. All his qualities (in the film), I admire. Now, since (according to Hoyle) he is colored pink, I must hate him. Well, I won’t. That’s what DOGMA stands for. In plain English: Do not use your brain or any part thereof. Listen to the “powers that be” even if you have to swallow your own foot on a daily basis. Now certain forums (especially cat and donkey lovers), verbally stand for all things American, and learned how to pump/beat their chests in the name of the Flag, the fifty nifty united states, the incredibly clever president we happen to be blessed with, but they will swallow you whole, if you, as much as pronounce the letter P, let alone spell out the entire word P-I-N-K.

OK you got me. It really isn’t a topic about culture. It is a topic about LACK OF CULTURE. What we so strongly and so profoundly believe, we shall demonstrate by destroying even the worthiest of those who we (mistakenly, self-righteously and pompously) endow with signs of a pinko. This Pinko (Garrison) fought tooth and nail against all odds and his deeds make him my brother, even if he’s the worst scum of the Earth, in your eyes. I saw in him the admiration for the country, Law, Constitution, pride of being American and the will to face unforgiving odds in an uphill struggle. OK, I’m done. Start the cat barrage. Get the donkeys out of the closet. Or, alternatively you may choose to read and make some sense by looking at yourself. Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. Just bring it on. Let him, who has sinned not, cast the first stone.

Iliya Pavlovich (the plumber)

Sorry to rain on your parade, but "PhD" often means "pile higher and deeper."

You don't ALWAYS have to let EVERYONE know that you have your doctorate. It isn't REQUIRED. :o)

If you keep posting these personal rants you're going to get flamed in no time. I do think you have something to add here, but here are some tips:

1. Don't post everything that comes into your head. Although you're not wasting paper like in the old days, you're wasting peoples time.

2. Don't sound so damn arrogant and self important. Most of the references to your name are firmly tongue in cheek and you come off like a liberal academic type when you respond the way you have.

3. You're not the center of the universe, contrary to what the world of academia may have told you. Get over it.

So, to summarize, write about pertinent things and be selective, other wise you'll get zotted.

Seems that some people need either pontificating or a sense of direction. I keep pointing my finger to the right but no-one's watching so I got stuck with "pontificating", besides LACK OF CULTURE is a little painful to me, so I thought I'd share that with those who are not totally illiterate. Literacy does account for culture (in most countries).

Having only a Bachelor of Science Degree and 30 or so hours of Graduate work, I'm just too dim witted to understand why you insist on bringing your rants to our attention.

Try a more normal approach. BTW having been here two or three years I've only found it necessary to start one thread. Perhaps you should observe a bit longer before you dive in and complain about the reaction.

If I get flamed - than, I suppose I got flamed. It wouldn't be the first time I got kicked out of a place I don't find worthy of my presence, nor they would find my presence of any benefit. I just rolled the dice and that's what came out. Thank you for the tips. This is a lot more valuable than your other mindless posts (yesterday), so I did accomplish something - I converted you to a thinker (after all that wasn't so easy - believe me, you were a tough customer). So let me get zipped, zummed, zotted or flamed I am happy to know I did contribute something. I do mean thanks for the constructive criticism (let's limit that to - so far today).

Iliya, there is a certain protocol which you should observe as, like the rest of us, you are here as a guest in a privately owned and funded forum. "News" posts should refer to and include excerpts and links to articles which you find interesting and/or informative. You can color that news by inserting your own opinions and comments in the first post and then take your chances of being flamed or zotted. But if you wish to just vent your spleen on a particular topic you should go to Bloggers and Personal. It avoids a lot of unpleasantness later on.

PS: Few if any us are going to be impressed by a PhD. Most participants here have at least some university experience and quite a few of us also have advanced degrees. Flashing a doctorate like it's a papal ring to be kissed just makes you look a bit silly.

I don't care what it means in the Stupidville, I don't live there.

Lol. Spoken like a true Doctor of Philosphy, that is, not QUITE clear or to the point, but very pithy.

**I know, oh, one or two PhD's who DON'T manage to communicate their doctorship to the world within the first 2 minutes of conversation.
**There are even a handful who don't shove it down the throat, clinching an argument with "Will I DO have the PhD after my name, so I DO know more."
**There must even be some, given the odds, with a PhD who don't think their s&&t doesn't stink.

I gotta admire your nerve, Dr. Pavlovich. You sound positively RUSSIAN.
That, in my book, is a good thing. I am teasing you. My teasing has an edge, though, but there is absolutely no malice intended on my part...just home truths to someone who has, I am POSITIVE, a skin as thick as rhinocerous hide, an ego as large as Mother Russia herself, an intellect as interesting as the galaxy...and, well, never mind, you get my drift.

Do you ever stop? Do you think you converted me into a thinker overnight? You really have far to much of a sense of self import.

You don't know who I am, and I certainly wouldn't make an issue of it. People who read my posts have an idea of where I'm at politically, but not personally. This makes me a more effective poster because people read what I write without a bunch of preconceived notions about the writer.

You on the other hand, have loaded the posts you write with a bunch of personal tidbits. Most people don't care if you have a PhD, are a "thinker" or what language you speak. They care about reading an informative or interesting post. If you want to tell the world how great you are as a human being there are other places to do that.

And by the way, you may be very, very surprised who some of the posters on FreeRepublic are.

Not a problem. Just out of curiosity, you have a very Slavic name and I was wondering whether you are now living in Russia or one of the surrounding ex-CCCP republics. It's always interesting to hear the perspective of someone who is either looking at his country from the inside or has an outside vantage point to observe us. Mad Ivan in Britain is famed and near beloved at this site and his posts are always very well read.

Actually it's a .50 cal machinegun. Normally the UH-1 carried the M60 7.62 machinegun. We had a pilot in our unit who was a little on the wild side went out and scrounged some groundpounder 50's and mounted them to his aircraft but discovered they vibrated rivets loose. He solved the problem by trading those to the Navy for some aircraft 50's. We wound up with 4 of them, 2 mounted on 2 aircraft. They really sounded sweet on the way into a hot LZ.

Sweet! I'll bet the aircraft 50's scared the bejeezus out of your foes. Have you ever perused the vids at vampirebat? If not, check out :

There are a couple of very cool (well, I think so) vid clips of helicopters in action (gatlinggun and apache kills). Amazing firepower!
