Bump!
"There was not some obvious malfeasence."
Oh, but there was.
Just because somebody's 4WD takes them into the boondocks doesn't mean that it is like a walk in the park. You prepare for a wilderness excursion or you don't. These people didn't.
We've come a long way from the wisdom of our ancestors.
Dang AF guys are spoiled.
Actually, my prayers for the lost guy - I wish he had made it.
But his wife & kid were much smarter. I have lived in a snow cave through nights way below -50F, snug as a bug in a rug.
The Mesa gets alot of snow; that's where there's great skiing in the Western Slope (Powderhorn). Are you at all familiar with the area?
"Even still, it is damned foolish to go into big country unprepared for any length of time."
Absolutely. Be prepared.
Of course, remind me to tell you about the night Pratt caught fire, trying to snuggle up closer to the Yukon stove, and Glynn put him out, with an e-tool...
"Be prepared."
The motto of the Boy Scouts.
My boyhood troop took us out on my first winter trip in January of 1969. It got down to -32F. I have spent the intervening years learning how to do things better.
We did have an episode on fire watch where some idjit had set his Yukon to NUKE and set the tent on fire - and everyone was dead asleep. Whole lotta snow got shoveled over that stunt. Lucky nobody got hurt.....
Funny , after a couple of weeks, the snow melted and grass started to grow again - on the 'floor'......Alaska is funny that way.
BTTT
Yep. "Why are you beating me with a shovel??" "Shut up, Idiot - you are on fire!!"
Never go out in the heat of the day without your blanket.
One of ACR's terra fix Personal Locator Beacons (PLB) .....they are (800$) cheap and will bring help to within a few yards of you. I recently purchased two to place in each of my 4x4's with small survival rucks I keep in each.
Yer right these ladies did well with the snow cave......
Funny thing, my boss tolld me today - "You know how you can tell a good ranger cadet? He is the one with all the crap dragging behind him, as he lerps through the woods."
He was kidding, of course. ;)
Yeah if I was still a pup and able to leap tall buildings I'd agree with ya.........excuse me if I select what's necessary for me...
Long as you can carry it and not leave skid marks, hoss. AF pukes always had too much stuff.
Wouldn't want to get blowed up, or nuttin'.
Oooop's don't open that package !
I used to live in GJ myself....I also plan to move back to the area in about 8/9 years. Have you ever been up on the Mesa near Powderhorn, though? Lots of snow can dump pretty quickly up there.
