WASHINGTON — Hoping to keep drivers licenses out of the hands of terrorists (search), the House voted Thursday to make states verify that applicants are U.S. citizens or legal immigrants. Republicans pushed the measure through on a 261-161 vote despite protests from governors and state motor vehicle departments that it would be too costly and would require them to take on the role of immigration officers. The bill also would make it easier for judges to deport immigrants seeking political asylum if they think they might be terrorists. "Common sense says we should not allow suspected terrorists to be able to stay inside our borders if they could harm us," said House Speaker Dennis Hastert. The measure was rejected by Congress and the White House in December as part of a bill reorganizing intelligence agencies in response to flaws found after the Sept. 11, 2001, (search) terrorism attacks. It was revived with newly won support from the Bush administration.

This was so important last year that Congress and the President were supposed to come in from the campaign trail and pass it. Everyone knows the terrorists would wait 39 months after 9/11/01 but it's that 40th month that's critical. We had to act now!
It'll be good to get senators to vote on this. We'll know who stands where.
Every RAT that is up for re-election in 2006 will vote for it. Bank on it.

I could rant for hours; but I think that we are all on the same level. Ergo, I will forego my rant.
Next election, Hilliary will be elected President on this issue.
A great victory for liberty...and a brutal defeat for the "ENEMY WITHIN" our borders....until the Senate gets ahold and rips out the heart...but for now...we can stand and take note.
The ID provisions are a giant encroachment on State perogatives. The law essentially creates a de facto national ID card. I don't like the looks of this one bit.
I just read Article I, Section 8 (Powers of Congress) all 18 clauses, there is absolutely no reference at all to a delegated power that would constitutionally allow the "...House...make states verify that applicants are U.S. citizens or legal immigrants."
Subsequently, Amendment X is the controlling constitutional covenant concerning this issue.
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
It is obvious that the House members, conservatives no doubt, do in fact care very little for the Constitution they are sworn to uphold by deliberately passing unconstitutional legislation.

One of the better politicians in the nation. Basically a libertarian running under a Republican banner. The only reason I'd ever move to Texas again is to vote for that guy.
