Democracy Isn't Liberty
The New American Magazine ^ | February 5, 2005 | William Norman Grigg

Posted on 02/05/2005 1:10:36 PM PST by libertyman

Amid raptures of self-congratulation, the Bush administration & its supporters take credit for the birth of democracy in Iraq--ignorant of the fact that democracy & liberty aren't synonyms.

When congressional Republicans attending President Bush's State of the Union Address dipped their fingers in blue ink--mimicking Iraqis who voted in that nation's elections a few days earlier--they weren't merely engaging in an act of self-dramatization. They were also testifying of their utter ignorance regarding republican liberty.

He should go tell this to the Iraqi people. They'll give him another finger salute.

One can have tyranny with democracy. But one cannot have liberty without some form of democracy underneath, because the sovereign no longer has to react to the will of the poeple.

Until an Islaamic theocracy becomes a fact, all this hype is just an exercise in Bush bashing through prophesy. The Lefties have no problem finding fault with things that have already occured and went well; it is a real cakewalk to nay say something that hasn't happened yet. of course, this guy was also probably part of the crew that said no election could possibly occur. Now that one has, he has to smear the next thing that hasn't happened yet. I may get hit by a car tomorrow, but that possibility won't keep me huddled in my warm, safe closet.

I think Mr. Grigg is exactly right. America isn't a democracy, & it isn't a form of government that ensures individual liberty. All democracy does is decide who will be ruled by whom.

I think they are digging themselves even deeper. People in America know that Iraq isn't going as well as we'd all like, but to continously rub our noses in the fact that its hard, and our military men and women are dying, and Iraqis are having trouble getting trained and out on the streets, well, its just wrong. We know it folks, we just don't sit around and pi$$ and moan about it.

America is a land of optimism and hope. They try to shoot down anything good that happens for us. The giddiness I felt on Sunday and Monday is partially replaced by disgust as hatriots have done their damdest to belittle what the Iraqi people did and what our contributions to that effort were and are. Disgust.

And there prophetic abilities were absolutely stellar in the run up to the Iraqi elections. The even had Hanoi John Kerry booked and ready to comment on the hundreds of dead and the great massacre that the election was going to be.

The utter depravity of those who would denigrate those who risked their lives to vote.

"The Rwandan genocide, perpetrated by that African nation’s Hutu majority against its Tutsi minority, could be considered a particularly vigorous exercise of the type of democracy Madison alluded to."

Why are you wasting our time linking to gibbering idiots who smear the walls with this kind of effluent?

In the liberal mind, even if you win, you still lose. That's why liberals are the party of losers.
