Rather Replacement All But Certain, Will Be Bob Schieffer On Interim Basis

CBS is taking the safe, very safe course with Rather replacement.

Washington bureau chief Bob Schieffer, often called "the voice of God," is all but certain to be named interim anchor on "The CBS Evening News" when Dan Rather steps down next month. Of course Rather is leaving to they don't have to fire him.

Schieffer, 67, will provide a smooth interum transition between Rather and a new, possibly multi-anchor program. Schieffer will anchor from New York, probably until late spring or early summer when the new format could ready. If accepted, the it would be a repeat of the Roone Alridge "News Troika Team" approach of the 70s.

Meanwhile, The "suits" at CBS News, led by division president Andrew Heyward, have been meeting behind closed doors (and closed minds) to work on a variety of anchor and format proposals.

White House correspondent John Roberts, once viewed as a possible heir to Rather, remains in the running as a member of the cast. Suits are looking inside and outside CBS to fill the roster of possible "charming anchor" candidates, all younger.

Also, over the hill CBS newsman Roger Mudd 76, is very angry at CBS Chairman Leslie Moonves comments that the single anchor format is over the hill.

LOL!
I thought CBS would bring in a woman. They are the paradigm of a liberal company after all.

The purpose is to try to bring back some credibility, some gravitas after the 20 year Rather fiasco.

Of course, as soon as they get it with Schieffer (Can you say Walter The Second?) they will blow it with the Kiddie Corral.

"Washington bureau chief Bob Schieffer, often called "the voice of God,"

Not by anyone I know. Smarmy, pompous, egotesticle*, self-righteous, bombastic, blabbering, self-absorbed, self-centered and basically an old fart maybe. But not God.

*New word provided by yours truly.

I worker in TV, rather than newapapers because I couldn't spell. FR spellchecker doesn't work on headlines.

"Today in Havana, Quban president Feedel Castro sed he wood ezily repel any U.S. lead invazion" works for TV.

basically an old fart

Going from one overblown over-the-hill liberal reporter from Texas to another.

If they replace Rather with someone nearly as old, who actually looks older, and as an interim measure, it is obvious that the network could not let Rather stay after his scurrilous attack on the President. It really makes it look like he had to leave, no matter how he spins it.

It really makes it look like he had to leave

I read yesterday that when Dan blew off doing the show recently that forced their hand.

My thoughts exactly.

He HAD to leave. And now they are scrambling to replace him.
