CHARLOTTE, N.C (AP) - They may both be out of office, but Bill Clinton remains the ultimate boogeyman for former Sen. Jesse Helms.
In a fund-raising a letter for his senatorial library, Helms invokes the specter of the former president leading the United Nations after Kofi Annan retires next year.
``I'm sure you might agree that putting a left-wing, undisciplined and ethically challenged former President of the United States into a position of such power would be a tragic mistake,'' wrote the 83-year-old Republican, who left office in 2003 after five terms.
The Associated Press obtained a copy of the letter Tuesday. It contains a petition asking President Bush to ``rebuke all efforts by Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, and every other liberal in Congress to push for Bill Clinton to become Secretary-General of the United Nations.''
A spokesman for Clinton did not respond to a call seeking comment. Clinton has said nothing publicly about wanting to lead the U.N.
The Jesse Helms Center in Wingate, 30 miles southeast of Charlotte, has a lecture series that has attracted speakers such as Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Its Web site describes it as a ``nonpartisan organization'' that promotes the principles espoused by Helms.
I agree. I'd agree more strongly, but that describes every U.N. Secretary General I can remember, and the world hasn't ended yet. Love the penguins!
The U.N. is utterly lacking in integrity. It would fit Clinton like a glove.
They are naming Clinton the envoy for tsunami relief. Step One?
Even if Bubba could have the position, couldn't the US just veto that proposal and that's the end of that story?
Not that I care much, to me, the UN has as much credibility as France does.
I miss Jesse Helms. When it came to those @#!%ing trade treaties and other anti-soverignty measures, I could count on him to tell them all NO. That even includes those in his own party.
It's because they recognized his talent for being able to laugh and/or cry on cue, on camera, as required.
He's also, damned brilliant at finding rocks on sandy beaches that he can fashion into crosses.
Hmmm. wonder how many speaking engagements he does lately? After his first year of retirement, I haven't heard of him being invited too many places.
All he has to do is run a red light district in some backwoods hole of decadence and the job's all his!
It's not easy to pick your most despicable Clinton moment, but that is right up there.
I never heard of such a thing. Senators with their own libraries?! Interesting. G-d have mercy if and when Sen. Feinstein or Boxer get one.
