Los Olivos - With hours to go before the celebrity trial of the century gets underway, hardcore fans stood at the gates of Neverland on Sunday, proclaiming Michael Jackson never could harm a child.

"He loves children, that has nothing to do with being a paedophile," said Chantal, 26, who took three weeks off from her job at an insurance agency in Switzerland to show her support for the "King of Pop".

"He is different from other people, that's why he's being victimised," said Chantal, as her 19-year-old friend Salome nodded. They said the star would never harm a child as he himself was like a child.

A few more fans, from Britain, Holland and Spain, sat in their cars outside the low wooden fence, hoping to catch a glimpse of the man they say has been wrongfully accused of sexually molesting a 13-year-old boy and plying him with alcohol.

Jackson had already been accused of child molestation in 1993, but settled the case out of court in a multi-million dollar deal.

"Some people like to go to the beach, this is my vacation," said Wiedjai Sewgobind, 39, who travelled from Amsterdam to show his support.

Like a father, a role model

"It's more than music," he said, stressing: "I'm not attracted, I have a girlfriend," but adding that Jackson is perhaps "like a father, a role model."

The fans just sat under bright blue skies and stared at the small road that disappears into the ranch. The narrow road, a guards' hut and lush, rolling hills are all they could see of the sprawling property where Jackson is alleged to have abused the boy two years ago.

But at the quaint, touristy town of Los Olivos, just a few kilometres from the ranch, several residents shrugged off the fans as a strange bunch.

"We can't understand them. They just sit at the gate and wait to see limos driving in or out," said sales rep Shelly Christensen, as she returned from a bike ride in the scenic countryside near the ranch.

But then again, she says, she can't understand Jackson either. "I think he's a very strange man."

Jackson is famed not only for his music and dancing but also for his frequent plastic surgery and his eccentric garb that at times includes a surgical mask.

His trial, which could last for months, begins on Monday in Santa Maria, about 50km from his home.

Jackson has pleaded innocent and is free on a $3m bond.

He has called the accusations "a big lie" concocted by the boys' greed-driven family.

His fans agree.

"I believe there's greed for money from the family and greed for power from the prosecutor who wants to go down in history as the man who led the trial of the century," said Chantal.

Most of Jackson's fans are these Euro thrash types that are about 20 years behind what is hip.

Its what we call "pathetic dorks"

Those who say that Whacko Jacko would never hurt a child, dont understand: Jacko and other pedophiles dont feel that playing with little boy's peepees is hurting them. They think they are giving the kid pleasure and forget they are turning these kids into sick monsters like themselves.

This whole damned Jackson family needs to be in a special glass encased cage somewhere so Doctors can study how a whole family loses its mind.

Why do the Dutch wear wooden shoes?

To keep the woodpeckers off their heads.

Agreed, I've never seen a family so obsessed with plastic surgery. Michael and LaToya are complete right offs, Janet has had at least 5 facial surgeries, not to mention the rest of her. I think even the mother has had a nose job.

Could we toss in the Revvum Jesse as an 'extra'?

Hey, I think that what might drive some Afro-American Jacksons into lunacy is pondering their Confederate namesake Stonewall Jackson.

As for Wacko Jacko, if THAT Jackson had refrained from unzipping his Johnson at the wrong time, this trial might not be taking place!

Yes, today is jury selection.

Watching the Jackson documentary helped me understand why he is the fruitcake that he is, but it also made it very clear that he likes little boys and only little boys. They have old video of Jackson in his secret apartment with Emmanuel Lewis and it is so creepy sexual that I would have no problem considering him a long term pedophile.

Maybe they saw Michael picking up and hugging Emmanuel like a teddy bear and figured that something nefarious was afoot.

FANS have been buying badges, T-shirts, mugs and even undies to show their support for Jacko.

One internet site sells 37 badges with slogans like “Michael is the real victim”. A woman’s thong costs £5 and a pair of boxers £7.50.

A HANDFUL of devoted British fans made the pilgrimage to California to support Jacko — and yelled out “We love you” as he strode into court.

Pam Goldfinch, 18, and her mum Yvonne, 45, travelled from Worthing, West Sussex, to brandish a banner declaring “Innocent until proven guilty.”

Pam said: “People should give him a chance.”

Jacko impersonator Navi, 32, from Essex, branded the trial “a great injustice”.

Mum-of-three Lidi Dyampoh, who named her baby Prince after Jacko’s son, flew out from her home in Canterbury, Kent.

Lidi, a 25-year-old nail technician, left her kids at home with her husband. She said: “I couldn’t stay at home knowing this tragedy is happening.”

Ann Scott, 65, flew from Newcastle with her grand-daughter Jordan Gibson, 16, to show support for Jacko.

She said: “I wanted to show there are people here who believe in him.”

'Stick with
me' plea

BODY language expert Mo Shapiro believes Jacko was coached in how to behave for his court arrival.

She said: “He wore sunglasses. The eyes are the hardest thing to control.

“And his wave to fans was a way of asking them to stick with him.” But she added: “He showed discomfort, like fiddling with a chain on his shirt.”

I'll sell gay
chat tape

ALLEGED tapes of Jacko talking about gay and straight sex to a lad of nine are set to go public.

A US agent is selling eight hours of phone chats dated from 1990.

US columnists Rush and Molloy said: “Someone sounding like Jackson is heard talking of his infatuation with Diana Ross and his dream of a funeral as grand as that of Elvis.”

With jury selection in Michael Jackson's child-molestation case starting today, those who rule New York radio admit to having second thoughts about playing the King of Pop's music.

"There are people who think it's a sensitive issue," said Rick Martini, program director of WNEW-FM Mix 102.7. "We play a Jackson song pretty much every day. There is only one song we have taken out, called 'PYT (Pretty Young Thing).' Some people feel Michael Jackson has tarnished his image. But I have found those people to be a minority.

"The bottom line is, if you like the music, you like the music."

WKTU-FM program director Jeff Z. told us: "Right now, I haven't made any changes, and I'm not going to judge him until the trial is over... if he's found guilty.

"When the songs are on, people sing to them, they don't associate it with what's going on. Do I cringe when he's on? If I think about it, yes. If I don't think about it, I can sing along."

WBLS Program Director Vinny Brown said, "We play Michael Jackson throughout the day. We play a select number of his older songs.

"Much of the audience - as it applies to him, R. Kelly or whoever else finds themselves in an unfortunate way - seems to separate what they do personally from what they like to hear. Even in the midst of highest controversy for an artist, people still call in and request."

Scott Shannon, the WPLJ program director whose morning show with Todd Pettengill reaches 2 million listeners a week, told us: "We still feature some Jackson songs during our '80s feature shows, not in our regular rotation.

"The controversy has affected his new music - it really doesn't affect his old hits as much. It's part of pop-music history. The music stands on its own."

Loose talk for sale

Meanwhile, Jackson could be haunted by some phone conversations in which he's said to reveal his private thoughts on sex.

Back in 1985, Jackson befriended the family of a 9-year-old Utah boy, Phoenix-based agent David Hans Schmidt tells us. Schmidt is now brokering eight hours of phone conversations Jackson is said to have had with the boy and his family in 1990, shortly before Santa Barbara District Attorney Thomas Sneddon's first investigation of child-abuse charges against the singer.

Having heard portions of the tapes, we can tell you that someone who sounds much like Jackson can be heard talking about his infatuation with Diana Ross, his anger toward his father, Joe Jackson, and his dream of having a funeral as grand as that of Elvis.

He is also said to share his feelings about gay and straight sex. Schmidt says he's holding a press conference tomorrow in Phoenix, but is reserving the complete tapes - and specifics about the family - for the highest media bidder.

It's unclear whether Jackson knew he was being recorded, but Schmidt says the singer's defense team has heard a portion of the tapes.

Jackson's spokeswoman, Raymone Bain, had no immediate comment on the recordings.
