Bishop Withdraws from Hillary Speech

On Saturday, after withdrawing the Diocese of Buffalo's sponsorship of a speech by U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton, Bishop Edward Kmiec issued the following statement:

"As Bishop of the Diocese of Buffalo, I wish to inform the faithful and the community that the Diocese of Buffalo is not associated with the planning or promotion of the lecture of Senator Hillary Clinton at Canisius College on Monday, January 31, 2005. This event has been arranged under the auspices of Canisius College without previous consultation.

"Although Catholic Charities was listed as a sponsor, this was without the knowledge that Senator Clinton would be one of the presenters of the lecture series. They have since withdrawn their sponsorship, as has the diocesan office of Church Ministry.

"We have communicated our displeasure and have discussed the situation with Canisius College officials.

"We certainly subscribe to the statement on "Catholics in Political Life" issued by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops that 'the Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principals with awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.' Howewver it also states that we are 'committed to maintaining communications with public officals who make decisions everyday that touch issues of human life and dignity.'

"It is for that reason, despite calls for the cancellation of the event, that it was thought best to allow it to proceed, though reluctantly, in order to maintain channels of communciation with Senator Clinton and others who hold her views. In regard to Senator Clinton, I believe she will be well aware of the depth of our beliefs on life issues in this very Catholic region of New York State. We trust that she will respect and be sensitive to those sentiments.

"We hope and pray for the understanding of our community of faith and that the outcome will be a positive one"

This certainly describes the Hildabeast.

I'm not sure if the liberals know how dangerous a conservative Catholic Church is to their political fortunes.

AMEN and BRAVO for the Bishop. The Catholics have taken a definite pro-LIFE stand and for that I am a deeply grateful Baptist.

I agree, if the Catholic bishops in New York come out against Hitlery, her political future could be over. I love it!

Good for Bishop Kmiec! It's about time the hierarchy re-asserted its role and responsibility to support the teachings on faith and morals in the Catholic community. Hillary has plenty of other platforms to spin her false and malicious message.

She can't fool conservatives yet. Which is why she is starting this early. She thinks she can win a war of attrition by changing a few minds at a time.

If thousands show up to protest when she speaks at this Catholic Institution, she will keep trying until there are only hundreds of protesters.

Not likely to work though. My Mother, who should be Sainted, by the way, for bringing up a hellion like myself (although after some turbulent teenage years I was able to turn it around and vote for Ronald Reagan for my first eligible vote), will still never forgive Xavier University for allowing Bubba to speak there a long time ago.

Catholics do not forget, and allowing Bubba to speak was a major slap in the face faux paus for local Catholics. Miss pro-choice (call it what it really is: pro-death) Hildebeast will learn what that means this week (hopefully).

Bishop Kmiec was formerly our bishop here in Nashville and I am just thrilled to see what he's doing up there speaking out against this thing. I am also a product of 8 years of Jesuit education and increasingly more embarassed to admit it when I see the kinds of things that go on in their schools these days.

The Bishop has led a great example for California and Massachusetts. Both states have over 50% Catholic population.

Please do not hold your breath for these "Catholics" to do the right thing.

I simply cannot vote for anyone who supports abortion. Period. If all candidates in on erace support it, then I won't vote at all.

And I will NOT vote for Giuliani, who supports abortion AND gun control. He simply is not our friend.

Isn't the Evil Witch still a "guest" speaker at the Catholic College?

HOW DID the Evil Witch "backdoor" in to the "Lecture"?

Who signed the Evil Witch up for this?

Not conservative, just more visible and aggressive on life issues. This is, hopefully, a revolution in the American Church against the Bernardinites.
