ROWLAND - A convenience store clerk who shot a man to death during a robbery attempt on Friday has not been charged, Rowland Police Chief Daniel Bradsher said.
The incident happened about 6:30 a.m. at the Circle B convenience store on U.S. 301.
Bradsher said clerk Clyde Bobby Carson shot Montrovia Aunte McLeod in the abdomen with a .44-caliber Magnum pistol. McLeod, 27, died at the scene. He lived in Garner.
Bradsher said McLeod entered the store and demanded money. He held Carson in a choke hold with a tire iron and tried to force him into a back room to open a safe.
Carson got free and grabbed the pistol from the office. Bradsher said Carson then shot McLeod.
McLeod drove off in a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix but crashed in the parking lot.
Bradsher said officers will review the evidence with Robeson County District Attorney Johnson Britt once the investigation is completed.

Wow! The guy was shot in the gut with a .44mag and was able to hop in his car and start to drive away?Gut shots aren't much. They have to bleed to death, or sustain damage to a critical organ, to die from those. People can live for 2-3 days with a gunshot wound in their abdomen before needing medical treatment to survive.
But a .44 mag is more powerful than most handguns, that's why he died so quickly.

I don't think so. It's a true tale of a gun used by a private citizen in self-defense. You just don't see many of those in the MSM.

I know when I do a gut shot to a watermelon with my .44mag there isn't much left but the rump! ;-)
Great. Now I got a hankering to go to the grocery store.

I want to know the ammo used. The 44 isn't always the best stopped, cause it blasts right through, if it's FMJ or just lead ball.
A good JHP should've dropped the guy, instantly. I do often hear that the .357 Mag/Sig and .45 ACP are the best stoppers. However, the more data the better.
A bit scary though, if a .44 doesn't stop someone, gotta wonder if any pistol will.

Personally, I think he got lucky and just happened to "land" in his car after he was shot. Sorta like a hole-in-one...
