In the wake of British Prince Harry's display of a swastika at a party last week, German politicians are calling for a ban on display of the Nazi symbol across the entire continent of Europe.
Germany has already prohibited the insignia within its own borders, along with the notorious "Heil Hitler" salute. It's also against the law to distribute Hitler's book "Mein Kampf," which can be read in most countries, including Israel.
"The whole of Europe once suffered under Nazi crimes, therefore it makes sense to ban Nazi symbols across Europe," Silvana Koch-Merin of Germany's Liberal Party told Scotland on Sunday.
The remark was echoed by Markus Soeder, the general secretary of Germany's Christian Socialist Union opposition conservative party, who said, "In a Europe grounded in peace and freedom there should be no place for Nazi symbols. They should be banned throughout Europe."
Soeder also said the incident should be a wake-up call for history lessons in British schools.
"After this incident with Prince Harry, the government should encourage our European friends in London to lay more weight on Germany's development beyond the Nazi period in history lessons," he said.
Many in the United Kingdom were outraged after seeing the cover photo on the Sun newspaper showing Harry sporting the swastika wrapped around his arm. Scotland on Sunday reports a "witch hunt" is now underway to find out who sold his pictures to the tabloid.
Harry has already issued a written apology about the incident.
There have also been demands for Harry to attend an event commemorating the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp.
But are those Euroweenies as concerned about the spread of radical Islam, a far more immediate menace???
Supression and distortion, 2 things socialists do best.
Being 20 yrs old, and making poor decisions are synominous. 20 yr olds are not known for their wisdom; that comes with age and experience.
However, knee jerk reactions to the poor judgements of a 20 yr old, by an entire country puts the collective wisdom/intelligence of the entire country up for debate.
Prince Harry was naive'; Germany is acting outright stupid.
Whatever happened to free speech?
Is stupidity illegal now?
Tell that to the 20 year olds serving in our Armed Forces.
I don't see where Germany has to "do" anything on a knee-jerk basis. They didn't force Harry to wear the costume, he isn't even German. Don't get me wrong, I abhor what the Nazis did, and I am not a fan of this German government, but this is a case of personal responsibility on Harry's part.
Just like all of the idiot singers and actors that have bashed Bush for the last year. The govt. didn't outlaw their records or movies, they let the public decide and when the singers and actors complained, they just had to realize that there are consequences to your actions.
How many 20 year old generals do we have? Or at least captains? Is it a case of age discrimination?
We need to start over - without the Left's 're-education' . . .recasting history. . .something the Libs are loathe to do; after all; Hitler was first a Socialist.
There must be no misunderstanding as to who/what Hitler was. . .and still is. . .and in what philosophy, 'nazism' took root.
Will the 'soup nazi', no rest in peace post Prince Harry's night out in costume?
Yeah it's been tried around here without success.
It took even less time for 'gay' to be corrupted. 50 years ago saying 'Oh that's Robert... he's such a gay fellow' would be a pleasent description of a joyfull person.
"Whatever happened to free speech?"
Free speech is already endangered in this country, you can imagine it barely exists in socialist Europe.
Easy to see why the Germs went Nazi in the first place.
That's it Germany, ignore it and it'll go away. Ban all references to your history, that way it'll never happen again, right? Guess what, we all still know it happened.
What the [EU] constitution says:
It sets out "rights, freedoms and principles." These include a whole list from the right to life and the right to liberty down to the right to strike.
