Man With Loaded Rifle Arrested In One Penn Plaza JANUARY 01ST, 2005

Police Friday arrested a man armed with a rifle inside a building a few blocks south of Times Square.

The incident happened around 6:30 last night at One Penn Plaza, across the street from Penn Station.

Police answering a 911 call about a man with a gun inside the plaza say they found him on the 12th floor. According to the officers who made the arrest, the man had a loaded, bolt-action military rifle.

Investigators say the man worked in the building, and gave up without a struggle.

Whew!

I was worried. For a moment there I thought it was an assault weapon.

Why ... why ... the guy could'a off'ed the entire city with one of them!

"loaded, bolt-action military rifle" - This description is more than a bit curious to the informed observer. It would be interesting to know precisely what rifle this was and how it was setup. Based on experience (e.g. the UT Tower sniper Charles Whitman killed 13 and wounded many others in 1966) a determined individual with a bolt-action rifle and a good location can do a lot of damage. The US miliary still uses bolt-action rifles (e.g. tuned up Remington 700's in .308/7.62 caliber) as sniper weapons. DO expect the Brady/MMM bunch to campaign against scoped high-power bolt-action rifles as "sniper" weapons in the near future, along with their efforts to ban semi-autos. Schumer, Feinswine and others of that ilk fear that the cross hairs may end up on their center of mass when the peasants decide to vote from the rooftops.

On what charge did they arrest him? Is it illegal to have a rifle inside a building in New York?

I think it would be an interesting experience to see how far and wide you could carry a hard shell rifle case around NYC and other places without being stopped.

How can they distinguish a rifle case from a Fender guitar or bass case? Would you get shot or stopped for a guitar case?

I remember my old rock and roll band days in NYC, nobody ever gave us a second glance except maybe some groupies.

I can see the future when hysterical headlines cry out about "man stopped with dangerous and deadly black powder, single shot assault rifle in the forrest". He was reportedly wearing a coonskin cap.

Didn't New York confiscate all the previously registered rifles and shotguns of New Yorkers who were law-abiding enough to register them.

You left out the ".50 caliber" part of that description.

Good points and so-o-o-o true.

In the minds of at least some, the descriptor "military" connotes a far more powerful and deadly kind of weapon so attaching yet another ignorantly used term to the spreading fear of the 'black rifle' plague and isolating bolt-actions as 'evil' is a very profitable tactic for the hate America crowd.

I imagine this guy very likely had a something like a bargain American '03, a British Enfield or some other retired rifle from foreign armories just because of their wide availability and low price. Potentially very effective, but hardly the grade of many modern commerical bolt-actions. But, hey, who cares - this ain't about facts, reason or logic anyhow.

The 'kid' does not have a great radio presence. He needs to write for a conservative magazine rather than speak on the radio.

What was the crime?

Perhaps he was concerned the building was occupied by Muslims and feared for his life?

Perhaps he was leaving from work to go hunting and didn't plan on going back home to get his stuff. If he worked in the building what was his job?
Perhaps parking garage security was suspect and he didn't trust security?

Intent has not been established so what was the crime?
What was his building's purpose? Residences, offices, combined?
How many blocks from Times Square is considered a few?
2? 5? 10? 50 blocks?

Now if the man is a AraB immigrant I would be more suspicious but personal information either. Facts are, there is not enough information provided to even suggest a crime has been committed so why even report the incident.

Hysterical anti gun news fabrication IMO.

Exactly, the first time someone gets shot by a gangster at 400 yards, the gun grabbers will be all over it. So long to scoped "assasin rifles".

Some gun-owners believe that gun-control victim disarmament laws will never affect them because they don't own a "military style" rifle. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is only a matter of time. If you have not bought a firearm in the last 10 years (and because of the durability of modern weapons this is the case for many gun owners) then you would be very suprised at what it now takes to buy a gun in many states. I have seen more than a few unhappy customers over these regulations when at the gun store. IMHO we need to reverse the damage by repealing gun laws now, not just stop the forward progress of the gun-grabbers.

"Hysterical anti gun news fabrication IMO." Ditto that. Imagine yourself walking your deer rifle from the garage where you just cleaned it back to your bedroom to lock it up in your gun safe (or put it under your bed if you don't have kids). Some joker sees you from the street through your front window and calls the police on you. There is a whole range of possible explanations here - some benign, some not. This article is pure propaganda, both for how it characterizes the few actual facts presented, and for the questions it leaves unanswered. And don't tell me the public needed to know this riveting bit of trivia immediately and the reporter just couldn't wait to get the details.

While I concurr with the balance of your premise, I do believe that Whitman used a .30cal M1 Carbine (semi-auto, military surplus,...etc.), the sad results of which give lie to the "inneffectiveness" of that particular cartridge.

BTW, I love your "voting from the rooftops" analogy.
