Washington State Voters should contact state rep.for revote

Posted on 12/31/2004 1:11:24 PM PST by bigjimdandy

Fellow Washingtonians. Following is a letter I sent to my state represenatives. Here is the website with your reps. email address http://www.leg.wa.gov/email/members/Default.aspx?Chamber=H . You may also call the legislative hot line at 800-562-6000 , but they are overwhelmed with calls from angry voters, so you will be on hold a while. I encourage you to contact them. Although Washingtons house and senate are democrat controlled, they are elected officals and know the voters put them in office. Feel to use my letter if you want.

Honorable________________.

The decision to hold a special election is one that can only be made by members of the Washington State Legislature or mandated by the Courts. It is my sincere hope that this election should be determined by the citizens, and not by the actions of our Judicial branches. It is the people of the State of Washington that should elect our Governor by a fair and un-bias process. As it now stands, there are plenty of people who think the election was "stolen". In order to give voters confidence in Washington's next governor, everyone should vote again. Of nearly three million Washingtonians who cast ballots in November, most have just lost faith in this election. It's not just Republicans or not just Democrats, it's everybody. Democrats are convinced the Republicans were trying to steal it, the Republicans are convinced the Democrats stole it; independents are just frustrated and angry. Considering all the confusion and animosity over the hand re-counting of ballots especially in King County, a re-vote appears to be the only fair and logical alternative. Any method of determining the voters intention when the vote is in doubt short of asking the voter is highly subject to bias. Machine counting or Optical scanning the ballots to tally the votes would minimize any bias or human error. I encourage you to support a special election for the office of Governor for the State of Washington between Dino Rossi and Christine Gregoire.

Sincerely

Yours is good. Here's mine:

There are few privileges as important and as imperative as voting. We have come to regard it as a "right" inviolate and sacred.

It is distressing, therefore, to see this right treated so carelessly and cavelierly as it has been in King County. "Found" ballots, highly subjective "divined" voter intent, phantom illegitimate voters, and a disregard for our military voters all contribute to a perceived disregard for the integrity of the process. Increasingly, my fellow citizens of King County and I regard the antics of Dean Logan during the hand recount as more of a railroading of the true intent of the voting public.

I am of the opinion that, while my vote may have been registered, it certainly didn't count. The only acceptable solution to what appears to be an extremely suspect miasma is to have a run-off election. In the interest of fairness, equity, and responsibility I hope that you will agree with me and make this happen.

You asked for my support to get elected. I am counting on your support now.

Respectfully,

I wrote to my local rep and reminded her that she was one of only two democrats that I voted for in this election. Here's her response:

Dear Sue,

Thank you for your email. I truly appreciate your support and confidence I work very hard to make sure that I represent the people of the 10th district not a political party.

State Law does not provide for another election so in order for it to happen there would have to be a change in the law. I understand the concerns of many about the last election but to be honest I do not think there is a chance a bill would pass to have another election. Not only is the cost which would be about 4 million but the impact it might have on future elections. I know that there will be some election reform that will come before the legislature that hopefully keep this sort of thing happening in the future but the fact is the race is almost a tie vote --closest Governor's race in the history of the Country. I have wondered what the numbers would have been without a 3th candidate.

Happy New Year to you and your family,

Mary Margaret

Note how she used "almost" a tie vote vs the "tie vote" they used when Rossi won the first two counts. Next time no democrat votes on my ballot!!

The horse has already left the barn. You Pubbies, in Washington state gave it up without a fight!!! The Democrat Party stole the election and you sat by in frozen wonderment. It's over. Christine is the Governor. The will of the people of Washington was subverted, and you stood by and let it happen. You only have yourselves to blame.

I know Mary Margaret Haugen because of my work on freight and passenger rail issues. She is providing the best boilerplate she can without having all the facts. She is also a personal friend of Gregoire.

My 3 legislators in the 32nd are all ultraliberal Democratic women, so my approach was to couch the letter as a plea to fix the many things wrong with the electoral process here in Washington, only incidentally suggesting that perhaps Rossi is right and we need to vote again.

You have to know the characteristics of the person you're writing to, specifically what issues they are interested in and where on the spectrum they lie.
