Oxfam Press Release - 28 December 2004

MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY

Challenge to Tony Blair to sign global poverty pledge

Today, MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY challenged Tony Blair to do much more to tackle global poverty by pledging to change damaging UK policies and press for international action that delivers a real breakthrough. The new report, Make History: A challenge to the British Prime Minister in 2005 was delivered to Downing Street, demanding that Tony Blair sign on the dotted line.

"We are issuing this challenge to Tony Blair as we believe that he must do more to end global poverty. It is time for the UK government to change key policies and put pressure on other world leaders to do the same. At the end of 2005 Blair and the other world leaders will be judged on whether they delivered a breakthrough," said Adrian Lovett from Oxfam on behalf of Make Poverty History.

Make Poverty History, which formally launches on 1 January, is a coalition of UK charities, trade unions, campaigning groups and celebrities, who have come together to demand that rich countries increase aid and make it work better for poor people, cancel world debt and change the rules of world trade so that they favour the interests of the poor. The coalition is part of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty, a worldwide movement that will come together at key points during 2005.

In 2005 the government has exceptional opportunities to take the lead in the battle against world poverty, as the UK hosts the G8 gathering of world leaders and also heads the European Union. Make Poverty History is planning events throughout the year, including a big demonstration in Edinburgh on 2 July to put pressure on politicians before the G8 meeting.

I think that what is meant is to increase aid to tin pot dictators, cancel their debt, and change the rules so their families can amass even more wealth.

Notice how we have stopped fighting world hunger.

Why? Because the world, particularly the west, produced more than enough food to feed the world. We GIVE AWAY more than enough food to feed the world. The only reason for starvation in africa is SOCIALISTS, COMMUNISTS, and DICTATORS.

Likewise the only reasons for sustained poverty is socialisms, communism, and dictators.

If this utter BS is pushed through it will not eliminate poverty, it will just make every one poor.

"Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime."

Until a thief steals the mans fishing pole. Instead of fishing and becoming more prosperous, the man taught to fish will have to make or buy a new pole. Either way, crime has made him a little bit poorer.

You've obviously been a victim of crime time and time again which has resulted in your own perceived poverty, so rest assured, we GET it.

And just so you don't think I'm being rude by not responding to the numerous future "poverty is only caused by crime" examples you'll feel compelled to send me, I'll say, "Buh-Bye, Now!"

No, quite the contrary. As one who has had successful businesses in moderate to high crime areas, crime being cause poverty is the result of my observation.

And just so you don't think I'm being rude..

As a matter of fact I do think you're rude. I think you're obstinate and intend to remain ignorant for as long as you can.

Are posts moderated when personal attacks happen? I'm not sure how to contact a Moderator/Admin-type. This guy won't leave me alone, for some reason.

Anyone?

Are posts moderated when personal attacks happen?

Most of the time, but arguments are rarely considered to be personal attacks.

I'm not sure how to contact a Moderator/Admin-type.

It's the "Report Abuse" button on the end, at the bottom, of each post. Hit it anytime you want, I really don't care.

However, if the moderator looks at my first post to you at #4, they'll see it was on topic and not in any way a personal attack. Actually, the post agreed with you. However, at your #13 post to my #9, you reply to me: "Well, Lucy...how do you 'splain the fact that Clinton's HQs are in Harlem? Kinda shoots that theory down.", is your post that began the discussion devolving into diatribe. I should have pushed the "Report Abuse" right there. Yours wasn't reply, but a form of ridicule toward me with a bogus context. By your standards that would have been abuse and I should have pushed the "Button" on you.

Manners, rather than slapstick, work well on the forum, even in disagreement. Tends to keep the "'splainin'" to a minium, "Lucy".

BTW, I agree that Oxfam cons fish from those who have fish, with the promise that they will give the fish to those who have no fish. But instead, Oxfam eats the fish themselves and then points to those who still have fish that there are still those without fish. In short, what Oxfam does is a crime.

My light-hearted attempt at "Lucy humor" was lost on you, so nevermind. You hi-jacked the thread about Oxfam, made it about your views on poverty and crime, and it went downhill from there. Why not start your own thread with statistics proving that crime is the sole reason for poverty and invite others to chat with you about it?

This is my last response to you. Please don't contact me again. Thank you!

You can be assured I won't. Not even when you're occasionally right.

Adios! Buck.

What these morons miss entirely is that it is impossible to eliminate poverty. "Poverty" is (1) a statistical evaluation: the bottom x percentage are in "poverty", or (2) caused by straight-out government theft and murder, as in Zimbabwe, or "covert" government taxes and laws, as in most of Africa, South America, Russia and the like.

"Poverty" doesn't "just happen". Certainly a bunch of Socialists, anarchists and other neer-do-wells, who believe in marxism, or that rich people "stole" their wealth, will not accomplish anything positive. They are like the Roman mob. Just throw them some bread and give them a circus to watch.
