I hope Arthur Clarke is okay. He lives in Sri Lanka.

It's evident that this is a result of Bush not signing the Kyoto treaty.

Perhaps if he simply expressed an intent to sign it, worldwide conditions would improve and all these natural, uh, er, unnatural phenomenon would cease and the world would be a better place.

Just think of the nirvanic conditions we'd have if he actually did sign it!

OK, sarcasm mode off.

The death estimates were pretty low on that graphic. Was it done immediately after the waves hit?

That graphic is about 14-16 hours old. It was posted Monday morning East Australia time.

A friend of mine and his wife arrived at Phuket about 2 hours prior to the event. He had to take a Ferry to the resort that carried about 500 people.

My friend was expecting to be housed in a private beach bungalow. He was very upset when told they were assigned a room on the 7th floor of a beach side hotel. He told me he was prepared to argue and hold out for the beach bungalow, but after the long journey from Tampa he needed to use the bathroom and decided to temporarily accept the hotel room.

Upon checking into the hotel room, he stood on the beach side balcony 7 stories up, taking in the view. He witnessed the wave overtaking everything on the beach, and crashing into his building. Salt spray from the wave covered his sevnth floor balcony. He said the sound of the impact was horrible with lots of glass breaking. It was followed by an erie silence except for the sound of people screaming.

Needless to say, the beach bungalow's my friend had wanted, were completely wiped out.

And now your friend and his wife have to be pondering
the question: WHY did He spare our lives?
And they will frequently soul-search in an effort
to ascertain just what their intended "role" in
the Great Plan is. In some ways, their Fate is
to be envied.

Thanks for sharing.

Is your friend still there? For the rest of his life he has a story to tell that will capture the attention of everyone who hears him.
