A MAN died after being hit by a bus early today - just moments after throwing a brick at it.
John Rothwell, 40, is believed to have been ordered off the bus after getting involved in a row on board.
Mr Rothwell, of the Broadway, Bredbury, Stockport, was asked to get off the bus at around 1am by the driver, a 52-year-old man from Longsight.
Mr Rothwell suffered multiple injuries in the incident.
The double-decked bus, operated by Finglands, was not fitted with CCTV cameras.
When Mr Rothwell left the bus on Wellington Road North near its junction with Sparthfield Road in Heaton Chapel, he is said to have picked up a brick from a nearby wall before stepping out in to the road and throwing it at the bus, damaging the windscreen.
Altercation
Mr Rothwell was taken to Stepping Hill Hospital for treatment for his injuries but doctors were unable to save him. The bus driver was also taken to hospital, suffering from shock. Police were due to question the driver.
A spokesman for Finglands said: "Our driver received minor facial injuries from the broken windscreen and is in a deep state of shock. The driver said the man was involved in an altercation with another passenger and that they both came downstairs. He told them that the police were on the way.
"He then said one of the men forced the doors open and got off the bus before throwing an object at it.
"We have launched our own in vestigation and we are co-operating fully with the police."
A spokeswoman for GMP said: "There is an investigation."
Anyone who witnessed the incident should contact the road policing unit on 0161 856 6173.
The law of gross tonnage will get you every time.
Never bring a brick to a bus fight!

Darwin Award candidate
There goes a former vote for Gore.
That's a damn shame. Always fun to watch Survival of the Fittest up close.
We have another Darwin Award contender!!
You got me by 33 seconds!
Grease-spot in the road category perhaps.
Duh.
"Please keep your arms and hands inside the bus at all times, however, we do not recommend coming through the windshield to get them inside."
Newton's fault. Bush got lucky this time.
I think it qualifies.
My sentiments exactly.
"Bus-ted"
3 people are on the bus.
At the first stop, 2 more get on.
Between the first and second stop, a guy gets smeared all over the front.
Q: How many people are on the bus?
A: Approximately 5.78.
Parts is parts....
Its not much of a mystery, however.
