Radicals Plan Inaugural Hijinx

The topic sentence of this AP article would lead one to believe the radicals have a relatively mild-mannered protest planned for President Bush’s second inaugural parade. They are going to wear plain clothes and then turn their backs on the president. Oh, he’ll just be devastated!

But a couple of paragraphs down, reporter Donna Cassata contradicts herself, drastically:

Among planned events are an anti-war rally and three-mile march to the White House, a massive bike ride similar to those that disrupted traffic in New York City before the Republican National Convention, and a "die-in" to remind the nation of more than 1,200 U.S. dead in Iraq.

Doesn’t sound very “quiet” to us. And the loonies aren’t going to dress down simply because they want to show more respect for the president (who received over 60 million votes), but rather to fool security so they can get closer to the precession. This is from the organizers’ website:

The Bush administration has been successful at keeping protesters away from major events in the last few years by closing off areas around events and using questionable legal strategies to outlaw public dissent. We can use these obstacles to develop new tactics. On Inauguration day, we don't need banners, we don't need signs, we just need people.

If you are interested in seeing today what you will see all over the news on inauguration day, just checkout the website of the real ringleaders of the inaugural protests, The DC Anti-war Network.

Remember, you can't spell "DUMB" without "DU".

One reason their side is losing ground is because they think and act in juvenile ways. On Jan 20, they are apparently going to display this shortcoming for all to see.

If I were there (I won't be) and one of these idiots turned around like that near me, I might be tempted to gently slap him/her on the back. Of course my hand would have a W04 bumper sticker in it, and the idiot might not know s/he was a walking advertisement for President Bush for hours.

That wouldn't be juvenile of me, would it? So what, it'd be good for a laugh.

Regarding the "die-in", when they tried it outside my office in Manhattan I overheard more than one cop say "We should just let the traffic keep going". I think they were being sarcastic but it sure was funny :)

They used to put on "Die ins" at Government Center in Boston. The Tactical Squad got the idea to bring the mounted cops down there way ahead of time so that the horses could "do their business". When the protesters went limp, the tacts would drag them through the horse bleep. No more die ins.

This idea won't work because these goons need the sense of security and courage that being part of a mob gives them. If they wear plain cloths and can't tell who is in the mob and who isn't, their courage drains away.

I saw posters all over DC on Monday morning about this. By lunchtime they were gone (I was searching them out to report here!) A Rovian plot, I'm sure.

Found this site: http://www.counter-inaugural.org

Sounds like they have events planned for the whole week. This could be the biggest FReep opportunity of the year!

The D.C. Chapter has a permit application in for three spots along the parade route to counter the leftists. Details here.

It's always rumours. They will never get the turnout with the cost of rooms in DC during this time period.

With any luck it will snow that day, or the day before, or be freezing cold (inauguration day is always hideous here, for some reason), which surely will discourage turnout among the sore losers.

I thought that Jay Nordingler's comment, something to the effect of: "Conservatives in NY don't place Bush-Cheney bumper stickers on their cars, for fear of them being keyed", was on the mark.

That's the ilk we're dealing with, here.
