What I suspect may be a gathering storm on President Bush's horizon in 2005 is a confluence of factors that will force on Washington a fundamental immigration reform -- one that will seek to genuinely secure our borders. This is something that up until now neither the Republican Party nor the Democratic Party has wanted...
Adding piquancy to this legislative challenge for President Bush and the Republican-controlled Congress is the entrance from stage right of Hillary R. Clinton, 2008 Democratic Presidential Nominee, presumptive.
In the last few weeks the ever cold-blooded Miss Hillary has started to stake out a position to the right of the Republican Party. Just listen to her Pat Buchananesque defiance: "[I do] not think that we have protected our borders or our ports ... we can do more and we can do batter?I am, you know, adamantly against illegal immigrants... Clearly we have to make some tough decisions as a country, and one of them ought to be coming up with a much better entry-and-exit system so that if we are going to let people in for... work...lets have system that keeps track of them... People have to stop employing illegal immigrants."
These are hardly idle pensees coming from The Iron Maiden of Chappaqua. Rather, it is a part, and a big part, of her calculated strategy to shed her liberal image and seize the White House from the Republicans in 2008 by attacking them on the most vulnerable part of their right flank: open borders, illegal immigration and lax anti-terrorist security.
I never thought I would write the following words, but: God bless Hillary Clinton. Though her motives are cynical, their effects may well be vital both to our national security and to our sovereign responsibility to control our borders.

Rudy is a new yorker...he can't exist outside of NYC. McCain and Hillary belong where they are. I believe both have found their niches...

Hillary may not be a credible standard bearer, but the Republicans could be extremely vulnerable on this issue. If a genuine moderate, such as Ben Nelson of Nebraska or Evan Bayh of Indiana picks it up, it could be a cakewalk for the Democrats in 2008 or even 2006, assuming they are not suppressed by the "hate America" crown in the ultraleft wing of the party.

Believe me, I didn't put this up to boost Hillary in ANY way. (I didn't put it up to slam her either.) But there is no doubt that if any prominent dem comes out loud and clear against illegal immigration it will move the debate along.
Re: your comment, obviously we can't judge her stance from just this brief quote, but yes this is in line with what Bush proposed. His plan includes a very thinly veiled promise of amnesty for those already here, and an ability to acquire permanent residency/citizenship status, iirc. Where she stands on those issues is not clear from what is discussed here.
Ala John Francois, I'm sure the details of her "plan" are not worked out. I assume she is trying to "triangulate", she sees this issue growing legs and wants to use it to advance herself. I'll give her credit for at least recognizing that the dems are going to have to do something besides insult "red" america and pander to the left to make electoral progress.

Tony Blankley is absolutely correct on this one. It's rather shameful that the GOP will be forced to do the right thing on illegal immigration - against their will when it should be a no-brainer.
He knows it better than anyone, probably. If Rudy were smart, he'd go back to the thing he loves -- being a prosecutor. Of course, now that he's in the limelight, that would seem like a step down. So he gets to do something he doesn't like forever.
I agree. For all the talk about thre GOP being connected with 'Red state' values, they have a HUGE blind spot regarding illegal immigration.
Leverage must be brought to bear. Unfortunately we have none where the two parties agree. Until a candidate rocks the boat and exploits the weak point.

it would get all the illegals under control and booted OUT of our Country. And secure the borders (for real).
