Students for Academic Freedom is a national organization that is registering with Oklahoma State Universitys student government to have a local chapter.
Garret Krier, broadcast journalism senior, is the contact person for Students for Academic Freedom. He is in charge of registering and organizing the new chapter.
Im very excited to start this chapter. Academic freedom for students is a problem nationwide and at OSU. But Im very optimistic as to what this chapter can accomplish toward academic freedom at OSU, Krier said.
According to the Students for Academic Freedom Web site, the organization is a national coalition of independent campus groups dedicated to restoring academic freedom and educational values to Americas institutions of higher learning.
Students for Academic Freedoms goals for each chapter include promoting intellectual diversity on campus, defending rights of students to be treated with respect by faculty, and administrators, regardless of their political or religious beliefs, promote fairness, civility and inclusion in student affairs, and to secure the adoption of the Academic Bill of Rights as official university policy.
The Academic Bill of Rights is a handbook by which Students for Academic Freedom goes by and Krier hopes to get this Bill of Rights to part of OSUs policy toward freedom of speech and professor conduct.
Krier said he believes that the Bill of Rights gives protection to students.
Due to other students complaints about professors voicing their political views and using their classrooms as a soapbox, Krier decided to get in contact with Students for Academic Freedom. Krier had a personal experience with a professor indoctrinating opinions and views that had no bearing on the subject of the class. This gave Krier incentive to obtain a chapter at OSU and work toward academic freedom for students.
What makes this seem like a biased and a Republican organization is due to the vast amount of liberal professors and the lack of conservative professors; therefore, it appears we are targeting one party, Krier said.
Professors at OSU may have different views concerning Students for Academic Freedom, but Professor Bob Darcy agrees that professors should not use their classrooms as a political soap box.
Krier said, I feel its very important to be proactive and looking ahead whether there is a problem or not. But at OSU, we believe there is a problem with issue and that this chapter could help resolve.

ping!
Ping!!!
Is there a college ping list?
Good luck with it.
Thanks for the bump!
Thanks!
Now its time to unload on the liberals!
I'm impressed with your activism.
Thanks!
Even though I haven't done much yet!
Just about the greatest time I had in Stillwater during graduate school?
Seeing Abby Hoffman debate G. Gordon Liddy at the Student Union.
I think the OSU audience's enthusiastic reponse to G. Gordon probably contributed
to Hoffman's suicide...probably depression at realizing not every major university
was a leftist bog.
Interesting. I saw the same debate at Univ. of Oklahoma. I believe it was 1986 or 87 during my senior year. Liddy tore Hoffman a new one.
I am a part-time graduate student @ OSU -- got my undergrad there in 12/77. One of my fellow students gave the O'Colly info to our professor tonight because of the way the professor carried on just before the election. Class is on Human Resource Development, not politics. This professor and my fellow student have tangled in a previous class. Professor, who is also my thesis advisor, found it interesting and thought he might provide some feedback to the new chapter.
While I think class time can be better utilized by staying on topic, I am not terribly worried about indoctrination since I am a 50-year-old grad student and believe I can fairly well resist any attempt. However, I would be concerned about my 19-year-old freshman daughter in a similar situation.

Cool!
