Coach, principal and others recall Scott Peterson fondly

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — Scott Peterson's high school golf coach and his sixth-grade principal were among 14 witnesses to testify Monday as his defense team continued its effort to persuade a jury the convicted killer does not deserve the death penalty.

"He was one of the finest young men that I coached," David Thoennes told the six men and six women who are expected to begin deliberating Peterson's fate later this week. "I never saw Scott lose his temper," said Thoennes, who coached the golf team at Peterson's Catholic high school in San Diego.

"If he hit a bad shot, he went on and played the next one ... I never saw him throw a club, yell, scream."

Retired principal Ronald Rowe showed jurors a middle-school yearbook photo of Peterson wearing a striped jersey and a toothy smile. During their brief contact, he said, the boy was "a fine school citizen."

MONDAY'S DEVELOPMENTS

Monday marked the second week of Scott Peterson's penalty trial, which will determine whether he receives a sentence of death or life in prison for killing his wife, Laci, and their unborn child. Fourteen defense witnesses testified, and all portrayed him as a respectful, pleasant and quiet young man who did not deserve a death sentence..........

More witnesses take stand on Scott Peterson's behalf

1:56 p.m.: REDWOOD CITY - Executing Scott Peterson would tear apart a family already marked by the murder of his grandfather and the time his mother and her siblings spent in an orphanage, Peterson’s uncle testified Monday.

“I, for one, I don’t believe he’s guilty,” said John Latham, testifying on day five of the penalty phase in Peterson’s double-murder trial. “I know he’s guilty by trial, but in my heart I can’t believe that.”

Turning to the jury that convicted Peterson Nov. 12 of murdering his wife, Laci, and unborn son, Conner, Latham said: “I know this guy. I know his family and I would not like to see him die. It would tear our family apart.”

Latham was among 11 defense witnesses - ranging from Peterson’s junior high school principal and the dean in charge of discipline at his high school to uncles and cousins - who took the stand this morning and asked jurors to spare the 32-year-old Modesto man’s life.

There is some sort of pyschological lesson here, although I doubt many will learn anything. But, it's always the same with these types; Bundy, Gacy, Peterson. They are always somebody that "would never do something like this."

As for Peterson, it seems, the total absence of passion, anger and conflict attributed to his "likability" for many. Everything that made him non-human made him the "perfect person."

Like I said, there is a lesson here... one we've learned many times. But nobody will glean much from it.

Guess they missed the tapes of his conversations with Amber while his wife was missing.

This Peterson family and their so called friends are the most bizarre, unethical people.

There was testimony about his cheating ways that seem to have passed over the heads of these nutcases.

It IS bizarre. I find it strange that they can drum up this many people to give such strenuous tributes to Scott's character. I don't know too many people who HAVEN'T murdered their wife and child that could get so many witnesses to what fine souls they have.

I'm suspicious.... I wonder if Jackie and Lee, and maybe Janey or some other persuasive, manipulative key person behind the scenes--and that could include the defense--might not be using some sophisticated tactics in convincing and coercing this list of witnesses.

I can't beleieve i'd say such a thing because I've tried to go easy on the family all the way through, but their gang of Scotty Admirers seems coached and wrangled from the inside.

Yeah.
Too bad Scott doesn't have that Dalai Lama total-consciousness-thing going for him.

Big hitter, the Lama.

Maybe the Dalai Lamma would sign up as a character witness for Scott. Golf team in high school, what a rich wuss. (And I like golf, but in my district, only the kids of wealth got on the golf team, because you could only get earlier training by being a memeber of the country club.

I wonder if we have any psychiatrists or psychologists on here who can weigh in on my guesswork: It seems to me this guy was a pampered child who could do no wrong, used to being the highschool hero, but life afterwards was not what he thought he deserved. His job was not prestigious, his social status was diminished, and he wasn't getting the hero worship from his spouse or others as he his parents and others had taught him to expect. So he had an affair(s)for the sake of his own ego. Laci became a weight that tied him down financially and otherwise, the baby would make it worse, so he removed them.

I heard that the witnesses have been subpoenaed......they are not appearing voluntarily. Don't know if that is true but it makes more sense.

Heard on Court TV that Scott lied to his family about a golf scholarship. Then he was dismissed from a college for so far unrevealed reasons.

Can't wait to see the book about the real facts of this monster.

Scott also refused to be interviewed by police in the disappearance of a coed he had briefly dated at a college.

He also had some very strange item in his auto when he made a plan to secretly meet Amber. Rope, shovel, etc. He was luring her with promises of birthday presents.

What a peculiar strategy this is... Deacon Threatt, golf coach... people last week all but declaring him the Second Coming of Jesus.

Sounds like he's a true sociopath. I admit the lack of direct evidence made me hesitate on death in this case but I've heard and seen enough. Whatever they choose is fine just as long as he never sees freedom.

A lot of folks were also shocked about Jeffrey Dahmer and reported him as quiet and polite. In fact, that seems to be a mantra when someone is convicted of a heinous crime, maybe we should start paying more special attention to the quiet, polite types...
