The list of original documents is impressive, and I have bookmarked it. However, the very first example of the scholarship is defective. "In God we trust" did NOT originate in the Civil War. The Star-Spangled Banner in 1814 contains in its 4th stanza, the following lines, "And this be our motto / In God is our trust."
I haven't checked any of the texts I keep at home, to see if the online versions here are correct or corrupt.

When I clicked on your link, I got "request document does not exist on this server."
How about you list the missing items?

Thanks. I've bookmarked this. Just a heads up, some of the links do not work. Among them, listed under George Washington's works:
Letter to Presbyterians
Letter to State Governments
General Orders, July 2, 1776

This is a great thread to bump, given the fact that a teacher in California has been barred from using founding documents in his classroom. Wouldn't that principal be freaked if he gave his students Governor Winthrops document on why the Puritans came to America?

Thanks, Gritty. Bumped and bookmarked.
