The New Economy: Just Another Name for Big Government?

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use.

We couldn't help but be struck by the real message conveyed by a recent brief in the Washington Post Sunday business section on job gains and losses near the nation's capitol.

The item juxtaposed the shuttering of General Motors' van assembly plant in Baltimore with the announcement that new high tech jobs were being created in Northern Virginia. At first glance, these developments seemed like an unalloyed triumph of the New Economy and a clear sign that traditional manufacturing is fading into irrelevance. After all, the Post writer emphasized that the GM factory, which employed 1,100 blue-collar workers, was "one of the last outposts of the Old Economy in the region." The new high tech jobs will be "higher-paying," and will number 11,000.

But here's what was glossed over. The GM factory was a private business, in an industry, by the way, that faces wide open and often predatory foreign competition. The New Economy jobs are all at federal contractors -- companies whose systemic use of the incestuous government-business revolving door has earned them the nickname "Beltway Bandits." For good measure, the State of Virginia will provide a $1,000 tax credit for each of these jobs, plus training funds.

For years, Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan and other cheerleaders touted the New Economy as the ultimate triumph of free markets, entrepreneurship, and globalization over ham-handed government regulators and troglodyte economic nationalists. It looks more like feeding time at the trough to us.

Dear Willie: Take an economics course at the junior college level. Your whole agenda of hatred for our president and your telegraphed signals that you have bought in to the usual conspiracy nonsense about fat cats robbing the little guy and all that baloney is so obvious that it's embarrassing. All you are currently doing is taking up space and using valuable oxygen.

RE: Take an economics course at the junior college level.

Did I miss something in the article? It seemed pretty straight forward. Private enterprise mfg jobs disappeared and government jobs (outsourced jobs) increased. No conspiracy.

Recent articles have reported on the aging government workforce. Perhaps some of these jobs will be replacing them. Other articles have reported that the Administration is trying to outsource more and more government jobs. No conspiracy. Just facts. What's your problem?

No, you didn't.
If you review CBart95's posting history, I'm afraid you'll find that he contributes nothing to discussion of topics on this forum. Just a lenghty string of put-downs and personal attacks against those he disagrees with, and an occasional nod of agreement towards others. Overall, not much substance to it at all.

All of these economic threads have that pattern.

Seems to me an analysis of these "hot button" threads would be interesting. Unfortunately for the President most of his "defenders" do little more than litter the threads. The President has stated many times that more good jobs are needed. Go figure.

Yeah, there is an awful lot of superficial demonization rather than substantive commentary.
But I don't recall having seen CBart95 on the econ threads before. And I didn't bother trying to figure out what other topics he may degrade. Just not worth wasting my time on such adolescence.

CBart95's hates it when you shine the spotlight on his socialist buddies. Socialism favors the rich, capitalism favors the capable.

RE: Socialism favors the rich, capitalism favors the capable.

Great point. People often ask why would the rich want socialism / communism? Well, they get to keep their wealth and they get all the government POWER! Especially if it's worldwide POWER.

And what's more socialist and anti-American sovereignty than New Democrat Third Way progressives leading the way to globalization?

http://money.cnn.com/2000/01/28/companies/davos_saturday/

"DAVOS, Switzerland (CNNfn) - President Clinton will address the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. . . ."

"* What should be the environmental agenda for business in the 21st century? That is the topic being explored by BP Amoco chief executive John Browne, Ford Chairman William Clay Ford and Enron Chief Executive Kenneth Lay, among others.

"* Doing well by doing good: corporate responsibility as corporate strategy will exercise the minds of Merck Chief Executive Ray Gilmartin, along with Pierre Sane, secretary-general of Amnesty International and others.

"* China's role in the 21st century, will be outlined by Vice-Premier of China, Wu Bangguo, with input from Roger Enrico, chairman and CEO of PepsiCo and Heinrich von Pierer, president and CEO of Germany's Siemens."

Do all your money-making now ("pump and dump"), useful idiots. The progressives intend to start setting the rules for world trade. Your "free trade" heroes Bill and Hill Clinton thank you for helping redistribute western wealth to developing nations. Now about those social justice rules. . .

Now on to the WTO to encourage it to take a more active role in enforcing social justice, environmental justice, economic justice, racial justice, justice justice, all kinds 'o justice. Oh, do any of you useful idiots out there sell rope? New Democrat Third Way progressives and their commie friends around the world want to know.

Now that's a conspiracy! I believe it. I read the DLC's New Democrat On Line, ndol.org.
