Since Nov. 2, I've had an icky feeling in the pit of my stomach. As an ardent Bush backer, my queasiness has nothing to do with the glorious election results, but is prompted by a murder that occurred the same day in Amsterdam.
Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh's short film "Submission," about the treatment of women in Islam, written by female Dutch parliamentarian and former Muslim Aayan Hirsi Ali, had aired in August on Dutch TV. Van Gogh was riding his bike near his home when a Muslim terrorist shot him, slashed his throat, and pinned to his body a note threatening Ms. Ali. This appears to be an organized effort, not the act of a lone nut; Dutch authorities are holding 13 suspects in the case.
After the slaying, I watched "Submission" (available online at ifilm.com) and my mind is still boggled that 11 minutes decrying violence against women incites such violence. There've been many films over the years that have taken potshots at Catholics, but I don't remember any of us slaughtering filmmakers over the offense. You didn't see the National Rifle Association order a hit on Michael Moore over "Bowling for Columbine."
One would think that in the name of artistic freedom, the creative community would take a stand against filmmakers being sent into hiding à la Salman Rushdie, or left bleeding in the street. Yet we've heard nary a peep from Hollywood about the van Gogh slaying. Indeed Hollywood has long walked on eggshells regarding the topic of Islamic fundamentalism. The film version of Tom Clancy's "The Sum of All Fears" changed Palestinian terrorists to neo-Nazis out a desire to avoid offending Arabs or Muslims. …

I think it is a safe assumption that Barbra is too uniformed to even know it happened. Seriously. I don't like the woman, but it's hard to get too mad at someone that ignorant.

We saw a sneak peek during the campaign: a funny commercial for the Club for Growth, denoting Kerry's flip-flops with a groom who keeps changing his mind at the altar and a bomb-squad specialist who can't pick which wire to cut. The producer was David Zucker, a self-described "Sept. 12 Republican," who made such classics as "Airplane!" and "The Naked Gun." Meanwhile, loudmouthed liberal celebrities were crucified in the Trey Parker/Matt Stone comedy "Team America: World Police."
Here's todays ray of hope.
Basically the Hollywood crowd are cowards.
They'll readily vilify conservatives because they know conservatives are easy and safe to insult.
If they ever tried to bad-mouth a muslim they might get a bomb on their doorstep or shot from a passing car.

That should please the terrorists.
I'm sure that Hollywood is a little uneasy seeing as how they couldn't pull the election in for Osama.

No sign of indignation from Speilberg, Stone, Sorkin and other liberal film-makers, indeed. Hate to use this analogy, but if the assassins had been "evangelicals" who targeted the film maker because his documentary was critical of them , I guarantee Hollywood would have declared war against the religious right instantly.
you know, Rastus, I find it difficult to get mad at true stupidity as that is not in someone's control...but ignorance is..especially from someone who is supposedly smart and has earned millions...I have always said there is nothing so dangerous as ignorance in action..and Barbra is a classic example..she does NOT have to be ignorant..she can change that...so I CAN get mad at her for being ignorant...and you can too...

Barbra knows; as do the rest of the 'Hollywood' collective. . .but since this killing does not fit into any existing paradigm they have for realities such as this; I am imagining they may just have called it an 'abomination' and that is 'that'.
Labeled/filed and buried. Theo Van Gogh; by his death; does not exist in their universe; at least for now.

Of course the cowards aren't going to say anything, after all they only attack safe targets.It's the reason they attack America and not Iran or why they attack Christianity instead of Islam.It's the mark of a coward to attack the one who he knows won't hit him back even though he knows he's a liar.I hope this subject is thrown in their faces for a while.
I was just being polite by calling her ignorant. I really think she's stupid as a box of rocks. Maybe I'm wrong. Either way, I don't begrudge your anger at her. I can't stand her, either, but I usually just laugh at her.

a ps or sorts. . .as to her ignorance; believe she imagines otherwise. . .and because she has been occupied by an unfortunate, interior political voice - made public - then we can assume she invites a 'willful' ignorance.
No excuses for that kind of determined ignorance and really, no 'pity' either.
Rather, I think, Ms Streisand, should reap the deserving criticisms where they are sown.
