Exit polls to be delayed in future elections
AP/MSNBC ^ | November 18, 2004 | AP

NEW YORK - The consortium of news organizations that runs the election exit polls has voted to delay distributing data for several hours on future election days. Exit poll data will not be distributed until after 4 p.m. ET to the organizations that have paid for it: ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News Channel and The Associated Press, NBC’s elections director, Sheldon Gawiser, said Thursday. On Nov. 2, the companies conducting the polls, Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International, distributed the first wave of exit poll data at 1 p.m., and the numbers were immediately leaked on the Internet and to the campaigns. Those initial numbers suggested that Sen. John Kerry had slight leads in Florida and Ohio, battleground states that were won by President Bush when the votes were actually counted.

They are only reliable when they successfully serve Democrat ends.

Good morning.

It would be even better if nothing was reported until the last poll closed. But this is a start.

“There were an awful lot of people on the Internet talking about things they don’t understand,”’ said Gawiser, head of the news organizations’ steering committee. “First-wave exit poll data is not terribly accurate.”

Pretty funny how they try to shift responsibility for the debacle caused by the exit polls to the internet bloggers and not to the pollsters, media and funders of the polls themselves. Good morning.

Have they not figured out that the people are fed up with their exit polls and simply not telling them the truth...

The only purpose of an exit poll is to provide a partisan media a tool to manipulate voters. Not only should they be banned, but I would favor the elimination of a state-by-state electoral projection until all polls were closed.

Waiting for actual and accurate results will NOT endanger the republic.

Fast food mentality rules the "culture".

It's been frustrating to hear even FNC staffers let that particular lie go by unchallenged.

It does seem like the media wants to rethink the Exit Poll strategy of making news so they have something to talk about until nine PM on election night. I can't help but wonder if we would have been hearing crickets chirping on all the news channels and shows on election night until 90% of all precincts were reported had the Exit Polls indicated that Dubya was whipping sKerry like a rented mule.

Not since the Marines blasted through the defensive berms on their way to Kuwait City in '91 to the tune of "the Marine Hymn", the '94 congressional election Republican take-over and the 2002 election surprise repudiation of the Dummocrat obstructionist policy have I enjoyed watching a program as much as I enjoyed watching that chimp Rather's face sag as the actual votes started mounting in Dubya's favor.

God, that felt so good.

It really won't matter because I think voters are lying to the pollsters, which is only fair because the media lies to the voters every day. Maybe one day we will go back to the pre-polls way of doing things...counting the votes on election day and then announcing the winners.

Only exit polls we heard about ( I was working at a voting precinct - we were in a school library - so we logged onto the internet - had no radio or TV ) we saw Drudge headlines that had sKerry WAY AHEAD but he was truthful - unlike the demoncraps - and he said to keep in mind that in 2000 exit polls had Gore way ahead, too.....

A better idea---ban "exit polls" completely.

These exit polls have proven themselves, at best, grossly inaccurate. Perhaps the MSM would save some credibility by simply scrapping them.

With the advent of electronic voting, you've got a pretty good idea of who is winning using the actual vote results within a few hours of the polls closing anyway. Even with that information, no one in the MSM was willing to provide a clear opinion on the results of the election until pretty much the next day.

Heck, anyone on FR could have done a better job at analyzing the election results than the MSM did.

The Administration moderator deserves praise because he refused to allow those stooopid exit polls here at election time.

Also, I was listening to Rush and he told us to ignore the exit polls entirely.

LOL. It's not just the exit polls. The media helped build John Kerry's campaign by giving him a total pass on his VietNam service issues, anti-war activities and his Senate voter record. Without that propping Bush would have slaughtered him. Kerry should never have gotten close to running for President and yet look where he ended up.

Just goes to show how much the media NEEDS a horse-race election and if one isn't there, then by God, they'll create one. More theatrical manipulation injected into our lives and destinies....

Exactly. Why is there any need to release ANYTHING until it is known who won? I say they shouldn't release exit polls or actual voting results until all of the precincts have given their results. I'd be able to go to bed early the night of the election :) (yeah i know... the media would throw a fit)
