Democrats want Bush to ask Canada to ban trash shipments

Democratic lawmakers want President Bush to ask Canada to stop shipping trash to Michigan when he meets with Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin later this month.

U-S Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow and Representative John Dingell have sent a letter today to Bush expressing their concern.

Dana Perino is a spokeswoman for the White House Council on Environmental Quality. She says the White House has received the letter and will consider it.

An average of 415 truckloads of trash enter Michigan from Canada each day. Democrats have been asking the E-P-A to enforce a 1992 treaty that requires Canada to notify the United States of shipments of trash.

Under the treaty, the United States can decline the shipments for environmental and other reasons.

Yeah. And re-direct the shipments to Carolyn Parrish's yard.

I would assume that Michigan is realizing some economic benefit that justifies them receiving the trash they do. Why should others interfere--like stupid democratic posers? It seems to me this is an issue for the people of Michigan to deal with. We ship lots of our trash other places. Why should we ban trash here if there are those who benefit from the trade?

Isn't that just typical of the arrogance of so many democrats. They'll stab you in the back, lie about you, call you all manner of horrible names, say that you are one of the lowest of the low -- and then demand that you do favors for them!!

How French can you get?

I don't see any downside to that proposal.

Exactly. In fact, here's my speculation on how this would end up: Any move by the Federal government to restrict these trash shipments would be met by a stiff challenge from both the Canadian authorities and the operators of the Michigan disposal facilities -- on the grounds that trash is a valuable commodity whose cross-border shipment should be protected under the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Hmmmmmm????

Piss on Michigan enviro weenie liberals by ignoring this question, or raise the issue and use Michigan enviro weenie liberals to piss on Canadian enviro weenie liberals?

No brainer.

Go for it, George! Run with the fair and immenently reasonable environmental demands of the progressive representatives of the Peoples Republic of Michiganistan.

Suggest that this violates the Kyoto treaty. It'll take them weeks to figure out that one!

Let's not forgot the other side of this argument. At current landfill charges of anywhere from $25 to $50 per ton (sometimes even higher), the total volume of imported garbage to Michigan represents upwards of $100 million or more going into the state's economy.

The only thing that confuses me here is the economics. Canada is the second-large nation on earth with a population one tenth of the United States. How could it possibly be cheaper for them to ship their trash to Michigan than set aside just a few of their 3.9 million square miles for landfills?

Canada must have insane environmental regulations or something.

Exactly is right. That's why I called them posers--stupid democrats. The fact is, trash is an extremely valuable commodity in some parts of the world. I wouldn't think so in Michigan but that is their business.

You probably nailed it. I'll bet it's next to impossible to build or even expand a landfill in Canada these days, and the landfills near where this trash is coming from are probably full.
