WASHINGTON, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- French President Jacques Chirac, an intractable opponent of U.S. actions in Iraq, congratulated President George Bush Tuesday on his reelection.
White House spokesman Scott McClellan said Bush spoke to Chirac about the importance of working together on common challenges "and he talked about how he'd continue to reach out to European friends and allies," but additional details were not disclosed.
Chirac was one of eight leaders to call the president Tuesday morning. The others were the leaders of Denmark, Indonesia, Georgia, Romania, Thailand, Egypt and Slovakia.
U.S.-French relations soured last year when France led international opposition to the war. More recently, it has opposed a role on the ground for NATO in Iraq. On the broader scale, Chirac has been a proponent of European nations joining together to counter U.S. power in the world.
That's what I was thinking. I wonder what he expected to happen to save him from having to eat crow?
I guess AFP finally called Ohio...
W probably gave the appeaser the hatchet he pulled out of his back. Jim
Oh, and by the way, George, I hope we can count on your support on the security council for this little Ivory Coast matter...
So, what is President Jacques Chirac going to do to help out? That would have been my first question, had he called me.
Oh, right!

Video of Bush giving the finger! =P
No, I don't think it's late, it says that Chirac called Bush on Tuesday. If that was last week, the election wasn't decided until Wed around noon.
I think the Vice President should send his thanks on the President's behalf in his inimitable style, but I wonder whether M. Chirac will comply by f***ing himself in the French manner or will be a genuine contortionist and do it for real.
It doesn't matter. He's no friend of America, regardless of his claims.
